It's not worth going to class except to turn in the homework. I couldn't follow his lectures, and instead used the textbook to teach myself the material. That said, the homeworks are very short, and the exams are relatively easy if you understand the homework. Overall, I felt like I didn't get as much out of the class as I could have.

gets lost in his own overhead notes. yes overhead notes. he still thinks it is the 20th century. only reasons for going to class are: 1. turn in homework, 2. ask people "is it just me or is this guy not making sense at all.", 3. you need to scope out the nerds to copy homework from.

J-Metz is the coolest old guy you will ever have as a professor. His class is a joke. He can't even keep pace with his overhead notes. Half the class is spent listening to him try to figure out where he made a mistake. Definitely bring a laptop to class and play quake online download-able from quakelive.com. Short of that read the book and do HW

Don't even bother going to class. He can't follow his own notes, and he clears his throat after every sentence. You'll learn so much more from the book. Homeworks (due Friday) are hard, exams are incredibly easy.

Pretty much skip class, and just read the book. The book will tell you good sample problems. If you can do the homeworks based off of them then you will be fine on the test

to sum the class up, its boring. this guy is boring, old, and cant teach. his lectures consist of reading from overhead transparencies that can be found online and they contain very little information. oh yeah, he gets confused easily and get lost in his own lectures. if you can do all the homework (key word "if"), you can do the test no problem.

Oh man.. where to start. This guy was TERRIBLE! His classes were a waste of time, he's old and hard to understand. You have to teach yourself the entire course and the material is rough. First exam was cake, second was impossible (~50 avg.). He DOES post notes online though, so that's a plus. Basically, just avoid Metzner at all costs!!

Stay away from this guy at all costs. He is a horrible professor and cannot teach for anything. Precious time that should have been spent on my 5 other subjects was wasted trying to teach myself how to do the homework and even then I couldn't figure it out. I've had above a 3.75 cumul. GPA for 2.5 years, and I'm probably going to flunk this class.

This guy was there when the greats like Shannon, Viterbi and others were laying the foundations of communication theory. But Metzner didn't make it into any textbook - take his class to see why. He isn't aware of any comm. research done in the last 20 yrs. His class is a brief (and mathematically shallow) overview of his own work. Avoid it.

Class was boring. Homework was confusing, but he gives lots of partial credit. Tests were similar to homework. Everyone seemed to get an A or B.

I thought that hard work could get you through any class -- WRONG! Not only is the book useless, the HWs are f$#$% hard! Not very good at putting things in perspective. Talks about arcane research from previous eras! Avoid this class by all means possible

Class shouldn't consist of reading off of slides that are handed out at the beginning of the class.
