Good lecturer but the exams are a complete JOKE. As someone else already said, it requires COMPLETE memorization of WAY TOO MUCH information. It does not matter if you get the concepts and understand, what matters is if you memorize his exact words. Such a shame for an otherwise good course... It's completely ridiculous how much you have to memoriz

One of the more interesting profs in the MICB dept. I like the way he teaches, he is always smiling, but sometimes gets off topic. Still a pretty tough class.

He explains things really well and goes into more depth with his slides. It makes 301 a little bit more tolerable and he's passionate about the material. I hope to get him again as a prof in a future class.

I'm a 4th Dean's list student, and have gotten a minimum of an A- on any MICB course I've ever taken! BUT I JUST COMPLETED THE FINAL YESTERDAY AND THINK I FAILED THE COURSE!! It's a 6 credit course jammed into 3 credits. The final exam questions were ambiguous, and totally unfair!

Hardest Micb class I took in the program. Material is straightforward but there is a MASSIVE amount. He wants his exact words used on a test. No text. Class notes are PACKED with info. Class is optional as he just spits out the notes online. Horrid exams that demand absolute memorization and regurgitation of his exact words. WORST CLASS EVER.

The hardest class that I have taken. I have little interest in bacterial physciology, but this class is a sort of rite of passage for microbi students- but don't take it as an elective! I have never learned so much, or studied so hard. Still not sure if it was worth it, but it essentially covered all the material in all my other 3rd year classes

Straightforward lecture but WORST exams ever. Tests for specific words, massive memorization required. While his notes are clear, they contain hideous amounts of info that you have to know. Hardest class I have ever taken. Took him 3 weeks to post final grades and there was LOTS of scaling up. He has a good sense of humor and is helpful with ?s.

I enjoyed this class...but HATED the exams. I'd think I knew what he was asking...but turned out I interpreted and answered it COMPLETELY incorrectly. inspite of the horrible mark I recieved, I'd still take this course - but maybe just not for credit '~'

very clear prof. one of the best at ubc. very difficult exams, but they're a good challenge. if you can't take the heat, then drop it. otherwise, get ready for a true test of your memory and comprehensive ability.

Least enjoyable course I've taken in my four years at university. I'm pretty used to getting honours grades in my courses but for the first time I have truely been afraid of failing. Impossible exams... made me want to cry a little bit.

ok teacher, but does NOT know how to make exam questions. All require PURE memorization of insignificant details, and very little on core concepts. extremely unfair way to judge understanding. Questions are also extremely vague yet demand specific identical keywords to get points. Its almost a joke. Dont understand why they keep letting him do it.

The guy takes his job very seriously and he does it well. This course is full of details but helps you understand bacterial physiology. The exams are reasonable and require understanding rather than only memorizing. Dr. Eltis is also very good looking, can't take my eyes off him during lectures:)

If this isn't a required course for you, don't take it!!! The course basically tests your ability to memorize 1000s of insignificant detail. Dr. Eltis makes good jokes, but that's the only positive thing I can say.

This is the worst class!! DO NOT TAKE IT!! You will have tons of material to memorize. And, since the exam could include little insignificant details from his notes, you may end up failing even though you understand the material very well.
