Mike is an incredible professor. He really cares about his students and really encourages/requires his students to actively participate in class and put their best work into their writing. Of all the FYS classes, his would be considered one of the harder ones. Be prepared for lots of reading, and be ready to write numerous essays.

Comment:

He is a well respected professor and one to make that well-known. I like his transparency. Though intimidating at times, he is available for his students as needed. He values peoples' self-expression. I think this is clear in his teaching style. He wants to hear and get to know the honest voice and opinions of the students he teaches.

Dr Steele is a great professor and as far as I can tell - a great person. He is helpful, encouraging and respectful. The kind of professor that lets you know if he disagrees with you but values you and wholeheartedly backs your right to your own opinion.

Mike Steele is the best professor I have ever, ever had. I was just reading through old class notes and honestly got quite emotional; he is an inspiring, thoughtful, and compassionate professor. I have never known a professor so willing to be deferential when appropriate (for example his sensitive teaching of gay and lesbian literary theory).

I have to disagree with many of the comments I've seen here. I found Professor Steele to be a very condescending person and quite disrespectful to his students. He often discouraged students from asking questions and spent much of his time promoting his own book. I would not recommend his classes.

I took several classes from Mike Steele in the late 70's. I now have kids at Pacific that have either had him and raved about it or that hope to take him. Word of advice: If you are at Pacific U. take at least one class with Mike. You won't be sorry. He'll get you thinking and you're drawn into discussions whether you normally like to or not.

Some people know a little about a lot of things, Mike is someone who knows a lot about a lot of things. He is ridiculously smart and can offer an opinion on any controversial topic (Holocaust, religion, evolution, etc.). He's very involved in class and you learn more from what he says than from the books. One of my favorite professors!
