Comment:
Attendance not mandatory, but only because you will definitely fail if you don't come to most classes. Have to do the reading, sometimes 200 pages an assignment, otherwise you will get so lost. good notes on papers, but also super picky grading wise. he likes to hear his own words rephrased. he talks the whole class, so not everyone' thing at all.

Definitely not everyone's taste, but this guy knows what he is doing. He does like to hear himself talk, but as long as you listen maybe half the time and take good notes, even though he never takes attendance, you will do okay. Your writing will improve, and he is so helpful for papers if you go and see him at office hours.

If you like listening to an older man talk without taking a single breath for 75mins at a time, youll love this class. If not, its pure boredom. I always enjoy English classes, but this is the exception. Get ready for 100 pages of reading per class (which isnt that bad) and mind-numbing boredom in class.

Fair warning: he may not be to everyone's taste. Super lecture heavy you really won't get a word in except outside of class, which he is open to. I found him really funny and kooky. Tough grader for some, and he has very few assignments. He knows how to make a class interesting and unique! Presents a lot of views.

Professor Sicker knows what he is talking about and is incredibly passionate about the subject that he teaches. I took him for World Cinema and learned so much from his detailed lectures. There is never time to ask questions, but he is super accessible outside of class. If you are interested in film, this class is essential.

Professor Sicker is a extraordinarily brilliant and cares about his students if you take the time to go to office hours (no ?s in class). I took World Cinema and we had a lot of homework - but it was just watching movies so I didn't mind it at all. He does read lectures straight from a paper, but they are no less insightful and are well presented

Whoever said he was inspirational was lying. He lectures the entire class time, only stopping for student presentations. He essay prompts are extremely vague, only compounding the fact he is a tough grader. Average class grade is a C+. Weirdly obsessed with sex and homoeroticism. Would not recommend taking.

Dr. Sicker is absolutely brilliant. He's one of the most knowledgeable and passionate professors I've had here. The class is not easy, but the work is more than worth it. He also cares a great deal about his students. Take him, take him, take him.

Tough, thought-provoking, thorough - and he's so good, he'll make you a better student and a better learner. Whatever hard work you put into the class will be worth it and will pay off years down the line. Don't leave Fordham without taking him. One of the best professors you will ever have, period.

Terrible. Absolutely Terrible. Class time is devoted entirely to him reading a typed lecture, and he doesn't pause or stop for questions at any point. I've given up on going to the class, because attendance isn't mandatory and it's completely pointless when all he does is lecture at an unreasonable pace. AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS. C+ Sicker

Comment:
Pretentious. Writes an hour and a half worth of lecture notes and reads them verbatim. Lectures are pointless and the objectives are unclear. Grading style is confusing and unforgiving. There is an absurd 3 hour final which requires knowledge of mundane film details. But hey, maybe you'll be one of his favorites. He also likes saying PROVOCATIVE.

took him for my film class (advanced lit) & was awesome. attendance is not mandatory but youd be stupid not to go because his lectures are so detailed. he basically just talks the entire class, but everythings really interesting. only 3 short essays, and 6 pg essay before the final exam(no midterm). id recommend this class to anyone who loves film!

Phil Sicker is formidably brilliant, enthusiastic, and engaging. Take his classes if you wish to be challenged and stimulated, and if you're serious about developing yourself as a professional academic writer in the field of English (esp. modernist fiction, Henry James, and James Joyce).

Probably the best professor I have had at Fordham BUT he is a tough grader (read: honest grader. Your papers will bleed read ink but you will be hard-pressed to dispute him on a single point). Class is an hour-long lecture with almost no student input, but he's the most dynamic and interesting lecturer I have ever had. Makes you care about english.

I've never had a seminar class where a week would go by without a single verbalization from a student until his. Very intelligent man, but if you like your own ideas to matter, I would avoid him.

I always tried to take the easy teachers and I got stuck with him and now i love that class! he explains poetry so well it blows your mind. He is such a good teacher so easy to understand and you only have to write three papers, no midterm. C+ sicker? no. i got B's or above on all papers and i suck at english.

Best professor this year. I'm actually learning something. I hated poetry before his class. If you're up for a bit of a challenge and learning, take Sicker. He's a bit intimidating at first, but after that first talk, he's easy to talk to. Ignore the "C+ Sicker". If you care at all, you should get a good grade.

sicker is the best professor in literary studies or english at fordham. he knows more stuff about anything than anyone i've ever met. you won't get a good grade in his class unless you really kick ass, hence the nickname "C+ Sicker." i got a B+.
