I worked hard in Dr. Sotillos class and she gave me a B+. Her grading is so ridiculously skewed, she doesnt actually teach anything but creates these insane exams that count the most. I got an A on every single hw and showed up to class but I still didnt get an A in her course. I will never take her again. She will ruin your gpa.

One minute she's talking about Germany, then the word "cation" next thing you know you're talking about happy meals at McDonalds- all for no reason ad unrelated to the learning objectives. :/

she is the worst professor I have had. she is extremely unorganized and her assignments make no sense. her grading is terrible - gave me a 1.9 out of 2 once. she gets off track about things unrelated. super hard to follow and she will throw assignments at you last minute. would NEVER take her again.

She is the most unorganized professor I have ever had. Her canvas seems like it would be organized but it's impossible to find anything because of all the pages and files. If you don't like group work I suggest you get over it because all of the work for this class requires that it be with at least one other person.

You'll learn more from the readings than the lectures themselves. She loves sharing personal anecdotes and opinions, and she posts so much stuff that her page is a mess. That said, the class was refreshingly challenging. READ. If you manage to tough that out, you'll surprise yourself with the amount you know by the end of it.

She needs to learn how to stay on track. Completely unorganized, specifically with work! It is as though this is a 'whatever' class, because she literally speaks about whatever! She is not mean, just extremely chatty and off topic 99.9 percent of the time. I truly hope she finds these comments and makes an effort to change her teaching methods.

Smart but never stays on track. You will learn NOTHING from her classes. She contradicts herself all the time. She doesn't understand time management; we got 3 extensions on 3 assignments. She loves group projects but doesn't really understand the reality of them. Doesn't really take attendance. Will assign tons of reading but I haven't done any.

Listen, if you don't read, you don't pass. The tests are VERY hard, and pinpoint small details. She's a pretty tough grader. She wastes class time telling stories. The group projects take a lot of unnecessary time and effort. I wouldn't recommend her, but you probably don't have a choice anyways. Just brace yourself. It won't be TOO bad.

In class we don't learn. She's really vague and digresses easily. She is knowledgable in her field, but its hard but she also doesn't understand things sometimes when you ask, you have to be really clear and emphasize exactly what you want to know. For a early 200 class with no pre-reqs, she also unfairly expects a lot of knowledge from you already

She is honestly a mess. I believe she means well, but it's physically impossible for her to stay on topic and she's extremely vague with assignments. It also doesn't help that she doesn't understand computer basics, and spends half the class complaining why it's someone else's fault that her slideshow won't work. I'll be avoiding her from now on.

I had her for language and culture. Awful class, but a requirement for a Linguistics major. She is SO VAGUE on what she teaches, you never know what is expected of you in assignments and exams are INCREDIBLY detailed, to the point where it is ridiculous. if she offers extra credit DO IT.

Professor is knowledgeable in her field, but is very vague with what is expected of you. Doesn't hear students out, takes offense easy. Disrespectful to students worries and questions, when asked to meet to clarify something instead of office hours expects to you to accommodate her wither you have class or not. Avoid if you can.

Nice woman, but she doesn't really teach anything. Expectations are not clear. It's hard to get an A on her tests even if you have read everything she posts. It was a very frustrating class.

Dr. Sotillo is a knowledgeable professor and is very interested in teaching this subject. She is a wonderful professor who makes boring material interesting. However, for Linguistic Majors Language in Society and Language in Culture are very similar in material which can be irritating.

I don't know why this class is mandatory for Linguistics. It's the same thing as Language and Society. It's not hard at all. There's just a lot of reading articles and completing one hw assignment a week. She's a very nice, brilliant prof , but she's just so vague. This time, there's only one "group" project that must be presented and one exam.

I took this as a hybrid class. It wasn't too bad, and she is a solid teacher; however, the class itself was difficult for me because I took it as a gen ed., but there were all these linguistic elements that I had absolutely no idea about. If this is a gen ed for you, take a different class.

As what everybody says, her exams are way to harddd. She assigns tons of readings for students. Exams cover everything, very detailed, and she never gives students any review before the exam, so don't expect to do well on the exams. And she's unclear about her assignments, very confusing. Avoid her classes!

Needed for major. So glad to never have her again. I wish MSU would hire more LNGN professors so I had other teachers to take for classes instead of being stuck with her. Brilliant researcher, not so much as a teacher. She does try her best to make the class interesting. I dislike her deeply and I have a B+ in the class for reference.

Prof. Sotillo is not as bad as everyone says. Yes, she's boring and isn't so clear on assignments, but her classes are pretty easy. This one was half in person and half online. You need the book to read and you must read the articles she posts. Her 2 projects and 2 exams are all done online. Just come to class, do the assignments, and you'll pass.
