Hanawa-sensei may seem to be harsh at first, but if you show your interest in Japanese learning and really work for it, you will find her pleasant to talk to and you will get good grades. As always if you expect it to be an easy-A class, it's not for you. In her class you earn your grades.

Still a little bit confused... She can be really rude sometimes and she does have several favorite students in class - everyone can tell that... But it's weird that she can also be really nice sometimes - makes me really confused! Pretty strict, but after all the grades were fine!

She's the only Japanese instructor with Ph.D. (Asian Studies) as of 2015. I've taken classes with other instructors before, and among all she is the most knowledgeable about Japanese literature, history and etymology. You'll enjoy a lot if you have enough Japanese background and interest. Just don't slack or goof around-she doesn't like slackers.

A fantastic teacher who will reciprocate the amount of effort you put in. If you work hard, show genuine interest, and possibly bring some interesting discussion to the class, she will give you an A. Conversely, if you slack, you're dead meat. If you're not ready to put a good number of hours into preparing for her class, avoid it.

I had her for my independent study and post advanced Japanese, and she is the best professor that I've ever had. She is a great professor who is very knowledgeable and willing to help students. If you show efforts, she'll like you. If you're there for an easy-A or your shallow interest in Japanese due to anime etc, you'll have a hard time.

As she said in the beginning of class, "Japanese is not inherently fun." But she has shown that using it can be. As a humanities professor, she has caught my interest in the etymology of Japanese. She can be very strict, very controlling, but in this way class is more focused. At the same time, she can be loose and has funny stories.

Generally an unpleasant person to be around. She constantly berates students who show interest in the subject and ridicules others for no reason than to make the class laugh - to no avail (seriously, she is as boring as cardboard). Just save yourself the trouble and take Japanese with a different teacher.

One of the reasons I'm still taking Japanese is to stick to hanawa sensei. Extremely unpleasant and rude. Makes it difficult to attend office hours. Do not take her if your not ready to go down fighting at the end of the semester.

I had Hanawa Sensei in elementary japanese I. To say the least, my expectations of her have not changed. She will berate any student that attempts to answer questions or show interest in something other than what she is teaching. She can come off as rude and callous. I feel that underneath her unpleasant personality she can become a better teacher.

Professor Hanawa tries her best but usually just plays along with the students that have Japanese experience. Those who have no background BEWARE! She will require that you put in the extra time to catch up. IT IS NOT TAUGHT LIKE AN ELEMENTARY JAPANESE I COURSE. If you are going to take her be ready for a rough semester and a bruised GPA.

I get the feeling that teaching isn't her ideal job; she isn't passionate about teaching and is generally a typical type of teacher. I do feel like she cares very strongly for her students, although she does expect them to follow assignments and instructions and be respectful.

I don't know why so many people hate on Hanawa so much. So she's a little harsh, but that's because she feels like if you aren't interested in actually learning Japanese, and just think it's all about anime and easy GPA boosters, you don't really want to learn the language.

If you don't already speak some jpnse, avoid her. This isn't taught like an elementary class. I had 4 years of jpnse prior and still found some parts of the class difficult. luckily i was one of her favorites so i got A's both semesters. but unless you are willing to take that risk, avoid her.

As one of Hanawa's favorites, I can say with total objectivity that most of these posts are spot on. She is very intimidating and impatient, and frequently misunderstands a student's question and makes them feel completely inadequate. Her teaching style is very discouraging and unfair. Don't take her unless you're fairly certain you can charm her.

Hanawa is laughably unprofessional; questions are generally dismissed and as for those miraculous few that slip through her nazi-filter, nine times out of ten they're left misunderstood by Hanawa who will then attack/berate the student who cannot decipher her incomprehensible english coupled with her apparent ineptitude at answering questions. RUN!

Hanawa sensei likes to talk about her cat a lot in the class...3 written exams, 2 oral exams, a skit, and many vocab/kanji quizzes for a semester. it is such a demanding course, if u don't put enough effort in it, u will get lost.. However, u can easily get a better grade than B in her class if u show the effort and attend most of the classes...

Not professional in terms of teaching method and attitude, always late to class and comes in mumbling a mouthful of excuses, and oh yes, incredibly moody. It's not enough to try hard. The point is to get all the work done, exactly the way she wants you to, and suck up to her like no other. More like a "Hitler" than a professor.
