Prof. Pitcher knows A LOT about the subject and is a really respected researcher in her field. However, she tends to ramble and if you don't enjoy lecture-style learning and are not very interested in African politics, do not take this course. Hard grader but willing to give feedback on essays and my essay grades increased as the term went on

Professor Pitcher knows a lot about Africa but is not good at teaching about the continent - her entire course was her ranting about facts and not coherently helping us understand the complex histories of all these countries. Her exams are all ESSAYS and you have to do two essays outside of that so ya, terrible course. And for 3 credits? No way!

Anne gets a bad rap because yes, she does lecture in monotone. Also, do NOT take this class if you aren't thoroughly interested about Africa...really bad idea. Beyond this, Anne really is amazing, extremely knowledgable, & brilliant. If you want to learn about specific African countries in depth and look deeper than colonialism...this is your lady!

Don't do it! Seriously, don't! The grading is ridiculous for this class, and the lectures are the most boring. Unless you have absolutely, absolutely no other choice, stay away.

Her lecture style is so incredibly dull that my learning was inhibited: it is exceedingly difficult to pay attention to her. I would not recommend taking this course with her unless you have no other choice.

Do not take CICS with her, she's a terrible lecturer not at all interesting. Most people on on facebook during class because she is so dull. She interrupted us during the mid-term and constantly goes on tangents. Worst of all is she grade way too harshly (or her non-existent gsi do) Just don't take class with her!

worst professor I've ever had. She doesn't know how to teach. She goes off on major tangents. She assigns entire books for readings at a time. Pretty much the entire midterm is on readings yet she never once goes over them in lecture. You basically have to teach yourself throughout the entire course.

It wasn't the worst class I've ever taken, but I certainly wouldn't suggest Pitcher to anyone. She's very into herself (brilliant, but still) and not helpful at all. Lectures are her rambling, very stingy on paper grades. Exams are easy enough, but I'd still avoid. Class isn't as interesting as it sounds.

If you do not know anything about Africa, do not take this course. It's that simple. You need to have considerable knowledge about Africa before taking this course as comparative research concerning three African countries is expected. she is also an incredibly hard grader and a stickler for grammar and citation so be read to be anal.

She seems quirky and confusing at first, but she really grew on me. She is pretty interesting and has done a lot of work in the field, and there is not too much work.

Professor Pitcher is the most useless human being I have ever met. She grades so messed up and has the most monotone voice I've ever heard. Her African Politics class at Umich was the worst class I have ever taken. While she seems helpful, she will lead you in the wrong direction. NEVER take her class.

BORING subject, but professor knows a ton ab moz. Class is mainly her talking/going on tangents and some discussion with min. Actually learned a good amount from sitting and listening without much effort; minimal notetaking. Not always clear with what she expects/wants but overall laid back.

She is interesting when she talks about Mozambique, but figuring out what of that you need to know can be difficult. Nice, seems willing to help. The class gradually got better throughout the semester. But there is a lot of reading, and very little of it is interesting.
