I was nervous as heck to take Dr. Mengistu with the reviews I read below. I actually took him Spring 2018 for Public Policy we only had 3 assignments which was scary. He is very smart and wise and I learned a lot from him. The only negative comment is I did not know where I stood in the class as far as my average. The class is very engaging.

Berhanu was a great teacher. He has such a passion for negotiation. He lays out exactly what he expects from you on your papers and grades them quite fairly. In class, participation is a must to learn the content. Pretty hard to pass if you miss more than one class, he does not provide powerpoints, take notes to pass.

There was a catalog descrepancy that had our class ending at 10:20pm instead of 9:50pm. He refused to acknowledge the catalog error, so we had to sit through his class an extra 30 minutes every week. When people were late to his class, he would make a spectacle of them. We are all adults here, married, kids, full-time demanding jobs. Unnecessary.

Mengistu is hard to understand and a very difficult grading. The reading he assigns are not that great and the text we use is difficult to follow. His accent makes it hard to understand. He is unpredictable in his grading. Sitting in his class, I felt so much pressure and uncomfortable. He embarrasses people who don't talk. AVOID HIM!!!

Dr. Mengistu is a challenging professor, and really expects a lot. However, his prime concern is the encouragement of thinking in a different way, so I think this rubs the wrong way with many. Although it was painful, I found that I learnt the most from his classes. It really helps to actually do the assigned readings.

He is on top of my favorites list. I can understand (some of)other peoples comments however, if you do the wk/participate you get a good grade. He provides excell. feedback and is always willing to discuss this or any other topic related to the class. He is easy to get ahold of.Overall very friendly,smart & helpful. Dr Mengistu has high expecatations of his students. He is instellectually challenging and makes you look at the world differently. Unfortunately, I had a hard time staying in-synch with him and what I thought he expected. I'd get it right on one paper and wrong on the next.

Dr. Mengistu cares a lot for his students, but he is very difficult to understand. Told us one thing and graded differently. He can be erratic and unclear in his expectations and often confuses students. He talks a lot and is very opinionated, and the classes are always behind. But if you seek help, he will give it. He is just hard to figure out.

Definitely the worst class I've taken in graduate school - his classes go absolutely nowhere (you'll cover one class reading assignment for *three* classes in a row). Hes impossible to understand and his grading is unpredictable, he's impossible to please (despite staying after for help several times). AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
