Worst history professor at ASU. He will tell you one thing he doesn't want to see on essay exams and then change his mind the day of the test, costing you points on the exam.

3rd class I've taken with Dr. Pate and would take him again and again. Wish other classes were formatted like his. Read and study, have to take this class seriously, but it gets easier with every test.

Read and show up to class, and Dr. Pate's classes can be incredibly awesome if you're a history buff. Love the lectures and never any group work. Study multiple days before test and you'll be fine.

This teacher will make you regret coming to college. He is a very tough grader when it comes to his essays. To be honest, his lectures are VERY boring and he's very monotone. I changed my major due to him. I refuse to put myself through another class of his.

Comment:

I've had him for classes 4 different times. I like him he is fair and tough. He will grade the essays but he is clear on what he wants and how he wants it. Do the work and put in the time you get a good grade. Don't and you will fail simple as that. Great Teacher, Great guy but he is not easy. This is a class for adults after all.

As others have said, you get what you earn in his class. Show up, take notes, do the reading, and study. If you have no interest in history, then do not take it. I would just like to point out that the poor reviews are also poorly written, which may contribute to failing a class that has an essay portion for each test.

though Dr. Pate certainly challenges his students, his own love of the subject matter make his lectures quite enjoyable. be present, read the text, take good notes and study like crazy two days before the test and you will do fine. this is not, however, a class that you can "coast" through so if you are not committed, do not sign up.

You must be able to take good notes as he talks the entire class, but will take time to discuss a topic with the class. He is a very thorough lecturer but will include things only from the textbook, so make sure to read. As long as you aren't disruptive, he will clarify anything you need, just ask. He's a tough teacher, but you'll come out smarter.

I've had two upper division history classes with Dr. Pate and must say I like him. If you are not prepared to pay attention in class, take copious notes, do the reading, and think about the material, then don't take his classes. He does not suffer rudeness, tardiness, or immaturity. Do not take him if you're just looking for an easy A in history.

I've had Pate before, and he's quite intimidating. Be careful not to get on his bad side (being late, pulling out phone, sleeping) because he won't hesitate to tear you a new one. But if you like history, his lectures are very interesting. I just don't appreciate his teaching style, straight lecture and outside reading.

I am not going to lie and say West Civ is an easy class. It is an extremely hard class, and Dr. Pate makes you work for your grade. If you aren't prepared for taking tons of notes and doing a lot of reading, hold off taking his class or don't take it at all. You can make an A in one of his classes. It just takes A LOT of work to get it.

I took him for History 1301 and got a D. I'm having to retake it. If you are a history major you will probably do ok. But all other majors should avoid this professor!!! I'm usually a good essay writer but No Pass Pate is picky about his essays. I could not figure it out. Save yourself having to retake the class... don't take from him!!!

Had the misfortune of having two classes in the same semester with this guy. One test I felt I had a good handle on but because of time constraints I had to gloss over some details near the end of the test. Ended up getting a C. A girl in the class got and A and only wrote half as much and didn't get through half of the era. Discrepancy big time.

Pate is called ?No Pass Pate?. I am a History major and have never in my life been in a class to this caliber. He expects you to be on time and be there. The exams are what are so impossible. There are only 25 questions and an essay the more you write on the essay the better. And there are only 4 exams. You take notes from the moment you sit down

Dr. Pate is a great teacher! He does expect you to go to class, show up on time, take notes,etc. If you do all those thing you should be fine. I didn't read most of the text book and still got a B+. He wants you to write alot on his essay the more detail you give the better. If you write info that was in the book he does notice. He's kinda funny to
