This is the worst professor I have encountered at UNC. Mas 110 is not really about Chicano lit - it is about her opinions and your ability to agree with her. She goes on rants all the time. Almost never keeps office hours. If you make an appointment with her, make sure you give yourself an extra hour - because she will be very late.

It is one thing to teach about minorities and oppression, but is another to on rants based on personal opinion rather than historical fact or present day problems. Also incredibly unorganized and often gives rubrics out one or two days before the assignment is due. Rarely keeps office hours and often very late to appointments made by students.

Often does not post a rubric until far after she has assigned the paper. Rarely keeps appointments for office hours. Also, incredibly biased professor. However, her class is very interesting and engaging in terms of content and discussion.

I strongly dislike her teaching method. Never has the same writing rubric makes it up for each paper due per reading. Gives last minute assignments and makes very rude comments towards "Anglo" students. Needs to learn to "practice what she preaches" Hate that class... She made it a bad experience.

She dresses beautifully lol. I don't think she ever repeated an outfit. She's very passionate about her subject matter. Everything is taught from a psychological perspective which I'm really interested in...tests are pretty easy if you just pay attention...

I took two classes from her right after she came back from her sabbatical. She accused the entire class of pretty terrible things when we didn't seem interested in class. Her grading was overtly bias. I learned a lot from her because I learned early on to be positive and agreeable.

Dr. Canales is a wonderful woman. At first, she comes off as very biased and feminist. She does have values in feminism and minorities, but she has every right to. the semester goes on, one can really see her dedication and intent of the course. Wonderful lady. Do not let your first impression shape the entire semester.

I have had the privilege to take MAS 100 and MAS 275. Dr. Canales does have high expectations of her students, but she encourages you to excel. She makes time outside of class for students and is a friendly professor and person. Both classes were great! She isn't biased, she has to talk about the past oppression of MA's because its required!

Too much information to study!The study guides can be up to seven pages and the tests are only 50 questions. She also MAKES sure that we do right brain teaching strategies before we start class but our tests are only multiple choice! Doesn't make any sense.

As someone already put it, if you don't see it that the Mexican immigrants have been stepped on and whatnot, you'll not do too well in her classes. Keep your views to the left and you'll be find. What a pity. Great lecturer, however.
