He's an OK teacher, but he rambles on and on about nothing. His handwriting is really bad, and I find myself wanting to fall asleep every time he talks. He goes way too much from what the book says, and most of the quiz/test questions are "what did the book define ___ as?". You don't really have much other options, so prepare for for frustration

This teacher is very clear and serious about being precise and accurate. The book is hard, but he really helps you focus on the important terms and concepts. I really learned so much about film and film making. Not an easy class though.

Intense! I thoroughly enjoyed this class. I looked fwd to each lecture (and screening). I sat through subtitled and B&W movies and wanted more. Saw aome hip new films too. Very intelligent prof. Best class I've taken in 2 years at this school. And Viens has a great sense of humor, totally dry --and his films are so good. Take this class.

I'm a film major and I didn't like this class. The movies this semester were ok, some sucked. He's a nice guy but I didn't think he was a fair test giver. His midterm didn't cover what made sense would be on the test and then when he curved he only affected the people with a B. UNFAIR. Class is overall easy but try to take another teacher.

takes himself way to seriously. class is easy. ta's teach classes/grade papers. 2 papers, m/c midterm and final. different movies every semester. "lab" times are choosen later, doesn't matter for which one you sign up for on prowl, which is kinda lame if none of their times work for you.

Heard many "horror stories" but was pleasantly surprised. He's a little distant and doesn't seem approachable but he takes what he does very seriously and offers a lot of really insightful feedback on editing projects.

Utter **** who doesn't give a crap about students and doesn't have a clue how to teach. Feedback is utter crap and utterly useless. Arrogant. Would never take him again and would STRONGLY advise against takng him. Has his TA's teach the entire class and I learned NOTHING the entire semester.

This teacher was pointless, he couldn't or wouldn't answer any questions. The TA's run the class. They did everything from creating quizzes, grading papers, even the final. Alhtough your taught by the TA's, the final and midterm is designed by the professor...avoid this teacher but take the class

This guy is like a rigid board in front of the class. He writes down the most absurd things for notes and they are never on the test, the reading is a lot and you dont have to do it, I never go to the Film class only the lab and I have an A.I would try to find someone with a little more personality

He's simply a jerk who has his opinions- and half the time he's wrong. He's a film critic; not a film maker. He doesn't have an ounce of integrity

Viens teaches Film 210 like it's chemistry or something. Dude, this is Art of the Cinema! Lighten up and bring enthusiasm to the class! It feels like he doesn't have passion for film or teaching; that he is just there for a paycheck. Great TAs though.
