Phenomenal professor. You are expected to work, and if you do, you will be rewarded. He is both passionate and knowledgeable, and in addition to teaching you his subject, he will teach you to write, to argue, to do research and to think critically. An essential professor if you want to be a better student, better writer, or better person.

Wow, Jeff. Incredibly demanding, a little full of himself but very rigorous. He expects a lot from his students and pays much attention to their progress and comprehension of material. Wonderful!

Comment:
Professor Ferguson is by far one of the most challenging professors at Amherst. With that said, he is also one of the most helpful professors I have ever had. Contrary to what one may assume just by looking at him, Professor Ferguson is very approachable and has a genuine desire to help students maximize their full potential in and out of class.

Along with Parker and Parham, the most rigorous and demanding and cutting-edge professor at Amherst College. He's difficult and demands a lot from you. Not everyone is ready for it, but he does what you want and expect from high level academia. One of the best.

I have not gotten anything from this class that I did not get simply from doing the reading. Ferguson is terrible at conducting discussion and answering questions.

Um...he can be long-winded. But, I have to say he's really invested in the academic success of his students...he is a little arrogant but I think it is unintentional. If you want to become a better student...take his class.

Like the other person said, he's "nice" but not all that approachable. I really didn't like the class. I got nothing out of it.

Arrogant and intellectually one-dimensional. Applies a shallow, close-minded and, frankly, weak approach to academic methodologies. 'Nice' but intimidating. Talks at you for a looong time.
