Took several classes with him as a non-major (Armor Making, Millinery, and Fabric Paint/Dye). He is an excellent professor and knows his stuff. Be prepared to work and turn out quality projects. He can be flexible on deadlines if you just talk to him and be clear with your problems. Answers questions thoroughly and invites great guest artists.

As an undergraduate non major I took 2 years with Jim ) Draping and Tailoring. I had heard he was difficult, but I was a professional and I worked hard. He has high expectations of his students but no more than a paying client would. If you can not perform at the level he expects you are asking for a participation ribbon and not an education.

Jim is gifted when it comes to costumes, but teaches at a graduate level and will not teach down to undergrads. He doesn't deal well with emotions, so if you tend to cry at critiques, try to grow a thicker skin. Doesn't understand mental illness and expects you to live in the costume shop with no life. Doesn't tolerate excuses of any kind.
