Jim is an amazing professor. This is my first class in ceramics in years and Jim has made it so easy and fun for me and the rest of my class. I am an art major but I would suggest it for non majors too if you love ceramics. Jim gives great feedback and will help you as much as possible.

Workshop used to be self directed. One credit class for advanced ceramic students. Changed to 3 credit course and must buy own materials. Used to be very creative and enthusiastic environment. Now very structured and taught students discouraged from interacting except as directed through strict instruction and not allowed to really be creative.

Jim is an excellent communicator. He has a wealth of knowledge and teaches his students enough to learn and does not overwhelm you with unnecessary facts. He is approachable and dedicates some of his class time to individual students to go over hisher work and to answers any questions one may have. He is a fair grader.

I've taken three classes with Jim and it's an easy A if you: Do the assignments, show up outside of class to do work, do the one paper he assigns, and are active in class. I may not have the best "art" in the class, but he is looking for effort, increased knowledge and skills thru the semester, and time spent on work. He is a kind and talented man.

Very helpful and kind guy, gives clear instructions and great constructive criticism. I wish he taught graphic design more often because he has much better clarity and better use of class time compared to Ken Jones.

Jim is super awesome! He's a really down to earth guy, really enjoyable to be around. Critical but kind when critiquing work, I highly recommend him to beginners and experienced sculptures. I am taking more classes with him because he is such a great teacher!

I had Jim McFarland for a sculpture class I took. He is a talented teacher, and can see beyond what is put in front of him. Excellent communicator. Fair grader. He is always there to help. Attendance is mandatory, unless you have an excellent reason ahead of time, which is more than reasonable for adults.

Prof. Macfarland is a good teacher. He is really into art and you should be to to take his classes. I worked hard in his class and tried my best in all assignments and got a B. I think he grades a little strict for those who are not so into art, but overall a good experience.
