takes off points for using contractions in writing like it's 1850. deducts an entire letter grade for running a day late. has extremely outdated, weird expectations for online media. writing/assignment guidelines are so specific and nit-picky that I couldn't focus on the actual material as much as following the rules, so I learned almost nothing

I have had Dr. Scott for two classes (HIS 105 and HIS 245), and I have really enjoyed him as a professor. Expect readings to be assigned for every class, and be sure to participate in his lectures. Most of his assessments are writing based, but if you do the reading and pay attention you'll be fine. He is a super nice guy and will help you succeed

I've never had a professor make me feel so stupid in my life. His lectures are god awful; he is super knowledgeable and intelligent but cannot make the information remotely interesting. As for grading, there was never a clear system and you're always left to guess. Also, he's very meticulous with formatting and will give a C for one mistake.

Dr. Scott is honestly a wonderful professor. Very rarely do you find a professor who is willing to work with you should you fall drastically behind on your work. I became sick, fell behind, and he delayed the due dates on my papers so that I could get proper feedback on my work. Lots of writing, but he does give excellent, detailed feedback.

Dr. Scott is an amazing teacher. I've taken him for an Honors class and multiple History courses. He is a tough grader, but fair. If you put in the effort, you should be fine. Most of his classes require extensive reading that you must do. He hates passive voice in papers. He does count off for grammar, but I mean it's college so get over it.

Dr. Scott is the best thing ever! He is so understanding and compassionate! He cares about his students, will work with you, and is always there for you. His class is also very easy with a small workload. He is very clear in his instruction, and he knows his stuff. He is just an awesome professor all the way around!

Dr. Scott is one of my favorite professors at Mercer. Although you must be an active participant in class, he does a great job of engaging everyone. I would greatly recommend taking any of his classes. The negative comments on here are from people who missed class. He is completely reasonable and you will not regret taking his class.

You must come to class. You have 4 group projects that are each 20% of your grade, and participation is the other 20%. Your grade depends GREATLY on how creative and useful the group you are assigned to is. If you get a bad group, best of luck (because you do not change groups). His "participation" grading style is not exactly organized.

His honors class is really boring, and you pretty much have to do all the work by yourself. He's a really cool person, but as a professor he's disorganized.

This was the worst class I took at Mercer University. His syllabus was not layed out well. He changed our grades mid-semester. He does not get back to you through email promptly and is not helpful on assignments. I would stray from this teacher if you are needing a History course to take. Simply the worst class I have ever taken.

I took this class and HIS 295 a year ago with Dr. Scott. He's super helpful, you just have to be on top of your writing. All those past comments should have understood that they are in college and should use proper english... He's not unreasonable at all.

pay attention to his writing guidelines. follow them to the T and u'll get a good grade. pay attention to class. read. duh, its college. its possible to get good grades (i got a 98 on a paper) actually pay attention to the class and u'll do fine. those that say don't take him obviously don't read for class or take time to proof read their papers.

Dr. Scott's class was great! This year, it was not required for students in the Honors Program, but most of us took it anyway. Dr. Scott brought in a bunch of different people to speak about a number of topics relevant to grad/prof. school and had us develop resumes, personal statements, and various checklists. I am more prepared for the next step.

Took HIS 165, Problems in American History. You have to talk at least 3-4 times per class if you want a B in class participation. I thought I was a good writer before taking this class. He will count 5 pts off for the smallest grammer error. The papers are not graded for content at all. Do not take him!

AVOID! His grading on grammar is ridiculous.I always felt like he didn't like me, and never has a prof. made me feel so unintelligent. He's one of those professors who doesn't like to give good grades and will search relentlessly for the most inconsequential errors in papers until he can lower your grade to a B or C.

DO NOT TAKE HIM!You can write a brilliant paper and he will give you a B just for a few grammatical errors! We aren't English PhD candidates! It's impossible to get a good participation grade, unless you practically teach the class! We also had an assignment due on a SUNDAY during Thanksgiving break!and he takes weeks to return assignments.WORST EVER!

Do not take his class if you can avoid it! No matter HOW meticulously you edit and revise your papers- He WILL find grammatical errors- and that will be your downfall. If you don't speak up in class VERY often, you will get a C or lower for your participation grade.

His class was perhaps the single most boring course I have taken at Mercer. He graded really tough on things that had nothing to do with content. I will avoid him if at all possible in the future. Take Sarah Gardner instead!

Comment:
He has a bias perspective on all class discussions. He is very knowledgeable about the things he teaches but doesn't seem to be very opened minded to other people's ideas. Don't take if u hate writing essays and participating in class. Class participation makes up 20% of the grade
