FALL 2018: I liked that he was helpful to his students but as someone who took four years of Japanese in HS, I had expected to learn more. The class that I was in suffered from lack of materials. Gets sidetracked really easily and talks a lot about his own life too much in my opinion. Spring Semester 2019, I heard that he changed things up.

Nomura Kimihiko-sensei is a straight forward professor. He expects you to read his books that he has already published, which consists of the connecting points in Japanese language and different variety of vocabs; although it can be confusing at times, sensei does go over the material in class if he has to. Overall, his class is easy to pass.

He is very helpful if you go into his office hours, but he spends most of our class time giving us the same life lessons over and over again instead of actually teaching us Japanese. Instead of helping us he just tells us to study as if we didn't already know that studying would help. Which was especially frustrating since I studied all the time.

Took him my freshman year here in chico state. I know nothing about the language. He went fast with his lecture. Didn't do so well on the midterms but just go talk to him during his office hours and you will pass his class.

Comment:

I completed the minor with Nomura Sensei, Jason&Jamie, native speakers. Nomura is a great person and just wishes to redefine teaching with his own style. If you want traditional class structure that disciplines you, then this is not for you. You can learn much from Nomura, not only subject matter but his own quirky intelligent philosophy.

It's not a hard class, but it can be stressful. He'll assign nothing for three weeks and then want you to memorize half the vocabulary in eight days. He has a lot of charisma, which can either be infectious or annoying depending on your personality type. He's a good teacher, though, if you do the actual work.

A great teacher, very funny, but be warned: his class has almost no structure. He expects students to know what they want to learn and to work at it. So the class is taught almost entirely based on questions asked by the students. Come in prepared to take charge of you own learning.(and don't be discouraged! he's incredibly helpful and very fair.)

Nomura Sensei was a great teacher. I learned the Japanese language so fast by second semester. People complain about having to study outside the classroom, well duh. You can't expcect to just go to class and learn everything. I spent most of my free time studying Japanese because learning a foreign language takes dedication. Best professor ever.

one of the best teachers i've had at Chico, very interested in subject matter and always willing to help individual students out with personal issues about class matter. Japanese is a fairly difficult language and i think that if it was taught by anybody else i wouldn't be able to keep on going.

Nomura Sensei has a wonderful understanding of how Japanese works and what it takes for and english speaking student to understand some of the japanese ideas about how to speak common japanese. He can be sidetrack as he runs the japanese department so lectures can go off topic.

The classes that I have taken so far with him has been very helpful and easy. Even if u fail his test you can still get an A. Talk to the guy and he will always arrange things with u to help u out. MOst hard working professor and Likeable.
