She does require a lot of work but I feel that my writing has gotten a lot better. She really cares for her students and wants us to do well. Not a fan of group work but I did enjoy working with other people on our script.

Late, and missed 2 out of the 10 classes we had that quarter. Knows what she's talking about, but a little unorganized. She also puts her students on the spot, expects a lot, and forces mandatory outside meetings when she seems to not do much in the class herself. Easy A, so take it for that.

She knows what she is talking about and going into the class without any knowledge of screenplay format I learned a lot. Yes, it's a lot of work outside of class but it's fun. If creative writing isn't your forte you probably won't enjoy it.

Not a bad teacher, but very very unorganized/absent minded. Changes due dates constantly. Also, the class was a lot of work required outside of class time.

117A had some useful info and I recomend it, but 117B was nothing but busy work. She helps you with structure but is useless when it comes to story. But it's really easy to get an A: just make one of your lead characters gay, and she'll pass you regardless of your writing capabilities. It's not fair, but it happens.

She's extreamly disorganized with the class schedule, so ditch the syllabus and just listen to what she tells you to do in class. Other than that she's sweet and really chill when it comes to grading. The only way you do badly in this class is to either get landed with a lazy group or ignore every word she says. It's a creative writing class!

She's pretty crazy in a gypsy kinda way. I personally think she's great when it comes to the coursework and getting us in the screenwriting mindset. She just happens to be a little disorganized, that's all.

I had screenwriting classes before going to Irvine and her class was the first time I ever learned true script format. She's a great person and very helpful to you even after you graduate.

make sure you choose your group wisely. If your group rocks, then you'll have fun. class is kind of a waste of time but you can't miss more than two or something. she's not as bad as the other posters have said. yeah, she's disorganized but she tries.

The other posters seem a bit pretentious..sure, this isn't a nyu or a usc screenwriting course..but it's the best uci can do.., don't blame the teacher, blame the admistration., Yes, cartier is disorganized and inconsistent but she is one of those "struggling artist" types, so she fits the stereotype. the class is an easy A with no work.

Okay clearly the previous responders are full of themselves, not to mention antisocial. A good teacher, who only stresses format because it's obviously important in early stages. Easy to approach, and good energy level unlike many of the other talking heads here.

If you are serious about screenwriting please ask for her resume. She is not even listed on IMDB, nada. She stressed that "in Hollywood presentation is everything until it's not." Clearly it is okay for herself to be disorganized. In the professional world, the PC term for Black Comedy is Dark Comedy. Someone seriously needs to replace her.

tends to ramble a lot. She's pretty chill, but makes you do quite a bit of busy work. (you write in a group) she seems to know what she's talking about and the things she makes you do seems to really prepare you for what to expect in the future. it's a demanding course, but it has its moments.

This professor is always for most of the classes. I mean, not just 15 minutes late... like 45 minutes. Most of the stuff that she talks about goes against the standard screenwriting practices.

Marie Cartier is consistently late, completely unorganized, unclear in her explanations, and wrong about a good many things. You will learn very little in this class. Take it if you just want to write for credit (but be prepared to do group work).
