This guy does NOT know what he is talking about. Constantly takes forever to cover one topic in class. His quizzes are just plain tricky and you won't get better than a B on them even if you study the material. This class is a complete joke. Do yourself a favor and don't take this class with Professor Butler.

Comment:

Dr. Butler taught my Intro to Music Ed class, and I loved it. He has to be one of the best professors I've ever had. Every day I left his class feeling like a better person. He's also hilarious and keeps everyone interested. Lots of philosophical discussion, almost no busy work. Great class and great professor overall!

This guy is an absolute joke. He speaks in vague ambiguities and when you try to question the vague statements he backtracks and talks in circles. He tries really hard to look like he knows what he is doing, but he is clearly clueless. He also has a tendency to make up words to make himself sound smart. It is a COMPLETE waste of time.

Great guy, really wants his students to understand the concept of "American Folk Music." Makes students think for themselves rather than give them answers to memorize (apparently what some think he should do). If you're interested in music and/or American culture, I highly suggest you take the class!

He's funny I guess, but this class was pretty much a joke. I have a 4.0, I get As in all my classes, even the tough ones, and I struggled to get one in this class b/c his exams are on blackboard and contain VERY vague questions. and he's a bit prejudiced... he makes you feel bad for being white at times.

This class isn't really what I was expecting. You learn the history of American music (Native Americans, Creole, etc.). But the class is fun enough & easy. All the exams are on blackboard (including final). Be prepared to be bored at times, though. And no textbook. :-)

TEACHAS! Anyone with a pulse can get an A in his class. Although he can be condescending at times, he is on the same crack the rest of the music ed. faculty smokes, so is generally in an overly pleasant mood.

I am a music production major, and have loved music my entire life. I can say with confidence that this class, though required for any audio production major, is useless. Have fun listening to his prejudices about african american racial experiences. The History of Folk Music is NOT about Bob Dylan, etc. BE WARNED.

Lets just say that I never went to class and I never read the book. I some how managed to get a B+. The final exam was great. He made everyone make ?'s and used them as the exam. He is a very nice professor.
