It shames me to write this but when I first met him I thought he was a really nice guy. However, that quickly changed when he began his teachings. His lectures are really boring. He does not explain things well. He assumes you'll get it because he gets it. You will not learn anything in his class.

Comment:

I had this guy when I was a grad student decades ago. I've been a professor of mathematics (earned MA from CSULA in 1986) for many years now. Katz is, without doubt, the lowest ranking instructor of my lifetime. Simply stated, he just does not teach. I have much compassion for the students he has turned off for so many years...what a waste.

His lectures are totally disorganized. He's helpful only if you asked good questions. One time, when a student asked a question (many people's questions too) he said "you're supposed to know it". The question wasn't silly, doesn't reflect lack of effort on the part of the student--nearly all the students had that question! He'll help only if ur goo

Not the easiest teacher, but do people really expect to just be handed an A for an upper division math class? Very, very nice man, extremely patient, go to his office for help if you need it, he'll help you until you get it. you have to work hard, but you'll learn a lot.

Dr. Katz is actually a VERY nice person contrary to what people have said. I really like him. Yes, his exams are on the hard side but he is actually quite fair despite what others have written. He likes to challenge his students to think. If you're lazy, prepare to fail...it will be you're fault too. Visit him in his office...he's very helpful

DONT!take this prof he will fail u.if ur lucky u will pass but about 1/2 the class will fail.his lectures r all over the place,hes into his own stuff so he wants u 2 sovle things his way,very hard quizzes,doesnt explain things,no partial credit its either u get the answer or no points.VERY BAD PROF i hope no 1 takes his class so that he cant teach

I have a BS and MS in math with a 3.9 gpa. This is the only class that I ever received a D in. I think that it reflects more on him than me.Stay away from this guy! He is like poison for your self worth..

this man is awful! i should have listened to this site. all though i passed his class,it was very painful and exteremly hard. i barely survived! so, here's why: never grades test in timely fashion. never tells where he is in the book or lectures. assumes you know material that he is covering before he even covers it. Vague,constanly makes mistake

his lectures are organized chronologically by topic, BUT, comes across as very disorganized b/c he doesn't work the example problems in advance to refer to, and forces us to write-erase-rewrite a lot as he fumbles through mistakes on the board. then he expects very quick performance on the quizzes, and doesn't curve even w/ freq. class avg of 50%.

Very nice professor, very helpful and cares about student's progress. He is fair in his tests, he is not easy, but also not impossibly hard. If you study and come to class you'll do fine. He also allows you to you to use a sheet of notes on the quizes and tests. One of my favorite math professors at csula.

His lectures were confusing. He's a very knowledgable man yes. Knows a lot about theory and math history, but he does not know how to teach. All his class will sound as if he was speaking in russian. Gives hard quizzes and final too.

A disorganized confused professor, his lectures were confusing, in a sense he would have an idea he would explain that and once a new idea popped up he would move on to that leaving the previous material incomplete. Good luck learning a thing in his class
