Comment:

It is true, you will NEVER see any of your essays. But it is a easy A if thats what your looking for. I took two of his classes and got an A in both. As long as you come to class, do your work on time, and ask questions if you have any, you should be good. Scares the students first few days of class, but hes laid back the rest of the semester!

Easy class assignments, but boring. You will write about 5 essays that he will never give back or give feedback on. He relies on "peer" evaluation. You won't know what grade you got until it's posted to your transcript, and you won't be happy with it. If you want to actually improve your writing and get a good grade TAKE SOMEONE ELSE.

Easy class. You can revise EVERYTHING! Tests included. We never got anything back that we wrote so it was hard to determine what our grades were. He's hard to understand as far as what he wants, but just write what he wants and you'll get an A. Do not buy his books - it's a waste of money.

Class is easy. 6 essays in class, between 500-2000 words. Doesn't return any papers, at all, don't expect them back. I don't know how we're supposed to improve our writing if we have no idea how we're doing in class. Will read a book about the 1920's and each chapter, take a few notes on flashcard for extra credit. No tests. One in class essay.

I absolutely love this teacher. He made us read a lot out of the book which was like HUGE, but his exams were nice a lot of multiple choice on Shakespeare and Fables and stuff. I would totally say take him again! LOVE BATES! AWESOME PERSON!

Had him for 1A and 1B back in 1997. He told me I couldn't write and nothing I did ever corrected my "deficiencies." Discouraged me going on to university ... here in 2010 I have a BA, MA, and MS ... all with straight A's. I was hand picked by my department as the best student writer for a published report ... so no Mr. Bates, I can't write.

Terrible. He never handed anything back except for one paper done in the very beginning of the class. How are we supposed to know if we're improving? He has an obsession with the 20's so you'll have to buy a certain book and take notes from each chapter. Final paper is on your favorite event that happened in the 20's. Terrible.

Oh he's a cool guy. yes you might need to wait for you tests but he's easy. He misses a lot of days which is good...lol I did not learn nothing but who cares, I'm not majoring in english. Take him if english is not a big thing in your major.

at first he seemed grumpy and like he would be hard. after attending class more i relized he's easy. he goes on about stuff sometimes and the whole class dosn't know what he's talking about. if you ask a question, he sometimes makes you feel stupid. but i recomend him if you want to have an easy class.

1. He's not clear on the test due dates, in fact in our class we had no due dates on any of our work listed on the syllable. 2. He's not hard. Gives you a lot of time to finish your work. Gives extra credit for reading his book. Good teacher overall.

Mr. Bates is an awesome tacher. True it takes time to get papers back, but it does for most of the English teachers. He is witty, honest hearted and will help you if you are having difficulty. If you are a smart mouth or a slacker beware.

good teacher. he is almost 10mins late to every class though. His homework is easy and essays are easy because you can choose your own topics, just follow his guidelines. he does however take forever to return homework/essays. Take him if you want a laidback teacher who has an easy class.

Mr. Bates is the best English teacher at ARC so far. He is a Little late at times but so are students. Yes, he never turns our paper back to us because i think to much criticism will only hold students back on writing their next essay. His style of teaching makes me want to learn, and show up.

He missed like 5 classes, he is always late. His quizzess are super easy if you read and come to class. It takes him forever to grade papers, and because hes lazy he dropped like 5 essays and shortened one. We wrote three essays like 3-4 pages each. super easy class, you don't learn a thing

Prof. Bates changes due dates alot. On a one specific date in which an essay was due, he announced that the due date was the previous Wednesday, but then was going to push it forward another week. He's about 10+ minutes late to every class. However, he did drop three essays due to his multiple absences throughout the semester.
