Honestly my favorite professor in all of scad. He genuinely cares for his students, and so long as you show respect and put in real effort he will grade you nicely. He does have some long lectures thrown in, but if you want to be taught real painting techniques, take him. He really helped me out when life hit hard, and I'll remember that forever.

I can respect profs who are strict and push you; Walton is both of these, but does so in very harsh and discouraging ways. He definitely has favorites and his tone of voice will change completely when talking to a student he doesn't like. He is retiring, so there's not much point in writing this review but I just had to say something.

He is one of the most terrible professors Ive ever had. Hes critical without being helpful, and doesnt create a healthy learning environment. He gives the same advice to everyone and helps no one. He is particularly rude to many students in the class. He is and easy grader, but I didnt improve one bit during the entire quarter.

Walton gives concise advice about anatomy and drawing but it's phrased directly and without sugarcoating. Had to do around 10-20 drawings every 2 weeks as homework which is necessary for a good grade. As an autistic student, he was careful to foster an environment that was disability friendly. Walton himself is a very technically skilled artist.

Rarely starts and ends class on time. A few times Ive had to wait 10 minutes or more after class ends and he insists I wait for feedback. Usually shows up at least ten minutes late. Gives really (I mean REALLY) repetitive common sense lectures. Makes you work in the hallway. There are many flaws, too many to list but at least he is an easy grader.

Overall average experience in Drawing class. Beginning of the quarter was slower with long lectures (personally CAN'T sit still through those). Had two huge assignments and he expected work on those outside of class. Didn't have actual HW. Critical, helpful feedback, knows what he's talking about for sure. Unclear instructions/answers to questions.

He's very passionate about teaching the people who want to take something away from the class. But homework is dreadful. Whatever homework u get it's in bulk, and he makes you throw a dart blindfolded for correcting mistakes. He is critical and sometimes elaborates but he prefers u figure it out. The only good thing is that u get 2 weeks to edit.

Almost 15 years later I still can hear Professor Walton's helpful critiques and suggestions when I paint. I would love to take a class of his again if only I still lived nearby. He was the best professor I had. He had expectations that will push you if you like to work hard.

Best painting instructor at SCAD. He is solid in traditional painting. He respects students who are respectful and show effort. If you want to do your own thing and not learn they way to paint the technique that has been loved and admired for centuries, then please don't take for the benefit of serious students. (Plural of he is his, not hes.)

This class was one of the hardest to show up to. I loathed it. He wouldnt allow you to talk at all in his class, he hovers which is annoying because while hes hovering hes critical, and he plays awful classical music and lectures on things that you wont need to know for the class for hours (in a studio class). I have to take him again & dreading it

I loved Roger's class. His projects weren't too difficult but my whole class still learned from what he had to teach, despite our different capabilities. The finals are the hardest but he is looking more for clear effort than anything. If he sees you come in for the still lives often and trying hard in class, it will show in your work and grades.

Best painting professor ever. Prof Walton is very knowledgable in the human form. He gives very clear instruction on color mixing, especially skin tones. He is very serious about teaching art students good painting skills and habits. The solid foundation in painting I received gave me tools to excel in many other media and disciplines of art.

Prof Walton provides a good, solid foundation in painting. He gives you individual instruction every class. He teaches you how to paint. He doesn't say experiment and do what ever you want. Students who want to learn to paint like him. Those who just want compliments and easy grades don't. He is the best painting professor ever.

Prof Walton is a superior professor of painting and color. Alumni would visit and tell us to pay attention because of his skills. Also he will bend over backward to help you if you show interest and effort. Silence is required so students can concentrate on painting and because Prof Walton is hard of hearing and background talking makes it worse.

He was definitely one of the WORSE professors I've had. You're first 3 sets of drawings are fairly easy but only worth 2 points each. You then are assigned to larger drawings, each 100 points. He lectures a lot even though this is a studio class, you get hardly any class time, and you are absolutely not allowed to talk during class. At all.

DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Professor Walton is the harshest grader I have ever met. He will not let you talk in class with other students to get feedback on your work, instead he pulls you aside into a different classroom to tell you how bad your painting is for 15 minutes. He provides unclear instructions, is rude, and doesn't teach well.

I took Walton for water based media. He's a nice guy and he absolutely knows his stuff, but his teaching method is definitely tear you down rather than build you up. And he doesn't give A's out easily- no matter how much I improved, I kept getting 89s. For me, all of this was very discouraging and made it hard to want to show up.

Walton is a fantastic painter who has a ton of experience and skill. If you have a problem he will definitely work with you to fix it, overall he is a great teacher. HOWEVER, I will warn you that he is very scatterbrained, forgets everything (which can be a good thing) and can be hard to communicate with verbally and emotionally.

Professor Walton is an amazing professor that many students take for granted. He is helpful when you have questions, and I always felt as though he cared about his students and helping them grow. He makes sure he addresses each student individually & gives helpful feedback. He is a rather traditional painter, which is great for a basics course.

Professor Walton is a decent teacher, if not a little scatterbrained. He taught concepts of perspective and ellipses pretty well, though he was a little monotonous. This class was an easy A for me.
