He's not kidding about the study guides being the most valuable study resource for the final exam. Study them well and you'll do fine. Papers aren't hard; he's a pretty easy grader. Seemed like a nice guy & willing to answer any questions to help students. I did learn a lot even though I didn't really read the books. Super easy for an online class.

He is very lazy when it comes to online classes. You are expected to read all of HIS books but given no incentive to do so. Grade consists of geography quiz 10%, 2 essays 30%, and a final 60%. The final is nearly impossible to complete. 90 min for 25 short answer and 1 750 word essay. Would not recommend, it's not worth the headache.

There is 1 geography quiz and 1 3-5 page paper that were easy. The final (worth 50% of your grade) is 90 minutes and is made up of 25 short answer questions that will require you to regurgitate very specific information from the many hundreds of pages you will have to read. It wraps up with a 750 word essay that I doubt anyone has time to finish.

Online Course. Syllabus is clear & outlines the expected reading schedule & assignment deadlines. Required reading primarily consists of his own published or compiled research. (Fair in cost) Very independent driven course. 2 Essays 30% of Grade. Geo Quiz 10% and Final 60%. Final is quite difficult, study the practice quizzes in-depth to pass.

I bit off more than I could chew with this class. The entire class is based off of the final exam which would have been fine if I actually read the book. I thought I could pass by just winging the exam and that backfired horribly. Great professor, super nice, just very hard.

5-week course. 3 assignments: analytical paper, geography quiz (easy), final exam. The paper was graded fairly, will have to ask for feedback. The final exam is tougher, 60% of your grade, given 90 min to complete 2 pages of questions and 3 pg paper. It is straight from the study guide, study the concepts outlined in study guides and you're good.

Horrible insutructor. He did not provide any feedback on the two papers he required- I got an A on both but still. DO NOT BUY HIS BOOKS you do not need them, trust me. Just print out the questions & answers for each section (he posts the answers towards the end)and study those. Final was not hard final asks for a three page essay which was random

A lot of work and the tests were difficult for a 131 class. Wasn't clear on feedback on the 2 essays and wasn't very helpful on the homework assignments. Wasn't consistent at all.

Dr. Haycox was on fire for his subject, and I caught the bug. Loved his history class, thoroughly. He's written many books, and I bought several from the UAA bookstore. He's great. I earned an A. Lecture notes are key, attendance, and some memorization. He is very fair and a brilliant teacher.

Really angry man. Would frequently scream at the top of his lungs and swear at the whole class if someone was late or left early. Threw things at students on a few occasions. Childish professor. Memorization is the only skill you need for this class. Very unimpressed.

I've taken a couple of Dr. Haycox's classes and been enriched by the. Extraordinary professor, his classes are not easy nor should they be academic growth is his goal. Keep up with the reading and be prepared to answer questions about it or you will be embarrassed. Keeps you on your toes.

Haycox is an amazing teacher. I took a few classes from him, and he's much better than MOST other professors in the History dept. The one class I didn't take from him was AK History, but should have. FYI: ALL the AK History profs use his book...because it's that good! And they all make you take a geography test. He knows his stuff!

Really self impressed.Final is BRUTAL. Prof doesn't know Native history. Quite opinionated. Learn what he wrote, may not be the real history, but you will do fine.Earned an A but it was a hard course. 6 books, 4 papers, geography quiz and essay final - final question was to write a 750 word essay complete with citations -- closed book!

Boring. Final is a huge part of your grade. Must pass it to pass class. Very comprehensive. Assigns his own books as the main reading material for the class. Seems rather biased/sometimes uninformed on Native issues, despite the fact that they're huge for this topic. Skip this class or take it with a different prof - you'll thank yourself later.

This is the break down of how Haycox grades: The class is worth 100 points. 20 points go to two essays (each worth 10) 5 points for a geography quiz, 10 points for two book synopsis (5 pts each). 60 POINTS FOR THE FINAL. i got a big fat F in the class after getting an A on both papers and one of the synopsis, (did't spend enough time studying).

I too ignored all of the warnings from others. His online class is terrible. Rarely returns emails, when he does, the questions you had were "clearly stated in the syllabus"(typical response)The text required are his own books that he wrote-do the math. He is always right, and makes sure you are clearly aware of this with his smug responses.

I did very well in this class - I worked VERY hard to do very well! By far the most demanding prof. that I have taken to date. Took class online - very little feedback or certain direction. I did learn a great deal about Alaska but lost a great deal of my summer doing it.

The class was easy but the final SUCKED! The memorization and expectations on the final were not at the 300 level class. I've heard after taking the class that his class was not that great. Heck Alaska history is one of my strong point and from beingin this class it feels like I was run over by a truck.
