Good professor, pretty easy. As long as you go to class and read the material (which for this class was fairly difficult and dense) you'll get an A. Really nice guy and very willing to help, although at times his advice isn't that clear. Overall easy class, but I'm not dying to take another. Grade booster but boring.

I loved his class. He is a great teacher, and the class is pretty easy if you can deal with Romantic poetry. He is a great teacher, and absolutely willing to run with whatever idea you have!

Professor Bates is an extremely insightful, reasonable, and helpful professor. his FSEM on the gothic was very interesting, and also reading and writing based.

All ASEM teachers will be hard but this guy is really nice and makes this topic really exciting. I thought Gothic Trappings would be a boring class but I liked the books and we get to watch videos, look at pictures, and watch MJ's Thriller video. He is really helpful if you talk to him and ask for help. Recommended. A VERY nice and helpful teacher.

Romanticism and Gothic Madness was a lot more interesting than I thought it would be. Mr. Bates is very helpful and lets you correct your paper once but it's easy to get a good grade as long as you take his comments into consideration and argue your point well. Sometimes he lectures a bit too much and you start to doze but otherwise he's good.

Always provided fascinating insights into the readings and their historical context. Gave good feedback on written assignments; assignments were not too difficult, but made you think in a different way. Bates is particularly great as an FSEM prof. because he's very helpful and approachable.

This professor was really helpful and really nice. He is also very understanding but very firm. Make sure you buy the books and actually read them because your entire class is discussion based on the book and your papers are based off of themes in the book. However, I would recommend him. Amazing professor!

Great professor, very intelligent and makes going to class interesting and even fun. If you haven't taking your advanced seminar yet, I recommend The Satiric Eye. He is tough on grading but it really helped me think and write in a new way.

He is a good instructor, he is a bit harsh on grading. If writing is not your best skill, you may want to reconsider taking a class with him, he over-analyzes every paper.

Dr. Bates was a wonderful introduction to DU. As my freshman seminar instructor, I spent quite a bit of time in his class and advising sessions. He is incredibly helpful, very knowledgeable, and made class enjoyable. Course work was strictly defined in the syllabus at the beginning of the course, and he stuck to it.

I took his Revolutions Core Class and Bates is a great, interesting and passionate professor. There is a good amount of reading but as long as you have basic concepts and PARTICIPATE you will do fine. There is one midterm and two papers. Attendance is mandatory but class is usually interesting. Recommended!

I took his Gothic Trappings Core and although it looked like a boring class, I actually enjoyed it. Class is entirely discussions about the assigned novels so it is IMPORTANT that you read, participate and take notes as the three tests are on the readings. If you particpate you will do fine. Very friendly, helpful and enthusiastic!

for his revolutions class: this professor is very charismatic and an excellent lecturer. He does well to explain a topic in which not everyone may be interested in. Show up to class and do your readings and he will do the rest

Bates is extremely helpful, especially when it comes to writing skills. He gives good constuctive criticism, and always tells you when you are doing well. His class was the best English class I've had so far at DU. Plus, he is really cute (but not exactly hot in a Chip'N'Dales sort of way).
