Comment:

Had Mapes for LAB only and she was painful. Always took up the entire 2 hours when the lab could have gotten done in 45 minutes. She tested on the labs with extreme difficulty, even if you thought you knew 100% what the lab was about. Very rude to students as well. Pretty brutal to go through even just weekly. I wouldn't recommend her.

Comment:

Your grade is only decided by 4 tests, including the final. Mapes tries to trick you on the tests, so you need to really know the material well. She lectures by writing on an overhead projector, which can get unorganized. The material is difficult, especially with no prior experience in botany.

Comment:

No homework, and very lecture heavy but if you go to class, pay attention, and put forth the effort outside of class you will be fine indeed. The tests are kinda hard because you need to know absolutely everything, but she makes it reasonable and gives you plenty of time. The lab for this class is absolutely a killer though, it drags on and on.

Comment:

Botany isn't going to be an easy A if you just show up and don't put in the time outside of class. If you study, go to class, and go to her when you have questions you should do just fine. Her lectures are funny and sometimes the material is heavy, but thats why you need to go to class. You get what you give in Mapes' classes.

Mapes is definitely a character. She is very funny and has a different sense of humor. I took her for Botany, and the class was not an easy A. The tests make sure you know every little detail about plants. It didn't interest me so the class was hard. She's sometimes annoying but, if you pay attention to everything you should pass (indeed).

Dr. Mapes is indeed one of the quirkiest professors you might come across. But you can tell she is enthusiastic about the class, indeed. Having her for lab is a plus because she lectures in lab (which was awful) but it basically was a giant review and was helpful for the tests indeed. Just show up pay attention and you'll be fine indeed.

If you can avoid her for Botany DO SO. There is 4 grades in her class and they are the tests. Gives 2 quizzes which are worth 1 percentage point each. She knows her stuff but is extremely boring. Makes you memorize the smallest unimportant details. She tries to trick you on tests. Other teachers gave graded homework to help study but not her.

She is a perfectly awful, scatter brained mess. No assignments were returned with enough time to be of use. She uses poor and ambiguous grammar on exams to try and trick students. I knew the answers and still got questions wrong. Really, she just likes that everyone does poorly in her class so she can feel better about herself.

Dr. Mapes is loved or hated by everyone, without much inbetween. The ones that complain about her generally don't put the effort in. Botany is NOT hard, just a little tedious and annoying. She repeats herself in lecture to drive home the important stuff, and takes the time to explain concepts in detail. She's quirky, but aren't all science profs?

Do NOT take for botany! Final is comprehensive on the entire textbook. She is obviosuly loves plants. Bring textbook to class. Need to read textbook to get good grade but she also teaches things not in the textbook. Most stressful class at KU. Its way more than flowers and trees. Rogue memorization of pointless details.

you can tell that she trully enjoys what she teaches. she isnt always the clearest when she first goes over labs but if you ask questions she helps you out alot. the labs arent always that interesting but her enthusiasm is contagious

Comment:

Horribly unorganized lecture that consists of her writing on an overhead and repeating herself again and again. When seen about my grades she first suggested dropping, then talked on the phone for 15 minutes with someone. Lab was the only thing that saved me. Avoid her if you can and take Sachii. He's much more helpful.

She was really hard. Not only were her tests practically impossible, her questions were really tricky and hard. She asks a lot of is it this this or more than one of the above and is constatly trying to trick you! Watch out and don't take her if you can help it!
