Horrible, avoid this instructor if you can. He was in his office most of the semester during class time, or when in class, playing ancient typesetting films c.1949 with a look of arrogance and nostalgia on his face. I had the worst luck asking for help, he laughed or shrugged. He's got issues, take another instructor who likes teaching.

Professor Byrne is a really good professor, he knows his stuff and knows what to expect out of you. He makes it clear, both in directions and help, what he expects out of you. Very approachable when help is needed and gives good advice. I wish I would of now taken DSGD104 with Byrne, seeing now the results of having taken 104 with Stern-Big Mistake

If you want to get into the BFA program, I would not recommend this teacher for you. Your work doesn't improve much even with his help. To get his help you have to really pry. And the critiques are dreadfully boring. Try to take someone else.

idk what everyone's complaining about. he's an excellent teacher. show him your work every class and he'll work with you. he loves seeing your progress! i hope no one is discouraged from at least trying his class out and determining themselves whether they like him or not. i'd take all graphic design classes with him if i could.

Have to pump him for feedback. Unclear comments make it hard to figure out what the assignment entails and/or what he's looking for. Knowledgeable, but not good at imparting information. Doesn't tell you WHY something does or doesn't work. He just says yes or no. This doesn't help students learn.

You have to have a very open optimistic mind when you take Byrne. It's easy to get frustrated and annoyed by his teaching style since he lets you do all the work. Subtle direction. Work with your classmates! Constantly approach him with smart questions and he'll be very useful. He likes overachievers.

Speaking as A student, I was annoyed that I got a C because my work did not reflect his oldskool thinking about how art should look. So if you want to do well in his class you have to sacrafice your good work and make it look outdated and ugly so that he likes it and passes you. You are left alone most of the time to wonder what the heck to do to.

Believe the others. This teacher doesn't do anything much. He comments on a work and that's it. Sometimes he makes suggestion and at the next meeting he complety forget. Then he asks you to reverse what you did. He tells you something is okay and gives you bad grade. When he likes or hates someone it really shows while others are mostly ignored.

He was out of the class most of the time...sitting in his office. Said nothing majorly wrong with my projects, and did not have any words for my last project because according to him it was great, but then gave me a C+ for the class. Gave other people a better grade even though their jalapeno didn't even look like a real jalapeno...favoritism...

He never really gave any specific suggestions, only if the overall sense/direction isn't right. I had to make my own personal list to ask him on what he thought about problematic formatting. Make sure to be thorough in your questions because he won't tell you the major problems until AFTER you get the grade (never told me anything was wrong on the last critique before a project's due, but I got a "C." WTF!).

Has a strictly heuristic approach to teaching. Translation? If you sit around and expect information to be handed to you on a silver platter, you're going to do poorly in his class. Be proactive! Very knowledgeable in the ways of type, but lacks natural talent in aesthetics (just look at his work). However, he's unmatched in problem solving skills.

It's hard to remember him ever teaching class. He'd just sit around in his office during class, and would only show up for critiques.
