He's an "okay" teacher. It's pretty clear he knows what he's talking about, however, I find this class to be rather frustrating. He only gives two exams, but they are pretty difficult. He also gives out weekly online assignments, but it seems like you have to read into his questions to answer the "implied questions" he doesn't explicitly ask.

Great professor, a very highly intelligent and regarded professor. You can learn a lot from him, his insights into the text are interesting and unique. He gives great feedback on all papers and assignments. Lots of reading but not an excessive amount. Definitely take him at least once if you are an English major.

He is a great professor. As, long as you show up to class and take notes, you will do fine. Plus, he tries to keep it interesting and shows a lot movies/film clips. I am taking him again.

Kempton is a wonderful instructor who challenges his students. His exams are tough so be prepared by attending class and taking notes so that you can deliver. I loved the Literary Criticism course (both the grad and undergrad version), so I was more invested...

Thoughtful and clear, Dr. Kempton is a professor that you can't help but respect. The reading load is light and the papers are short (2x1750 words). Midterm and final are easy if you come to class and read/take notes. His lectures are enjoyable and in-class writing grades are fairly high all-around. Welcomes office hours. Certainly recommended.

I took Medieval Lit. with Dr.Kempton, a subject in which I was not at all interested in. I left the class fascinated by it. He is brilliant, kind and very helpful. He has a true passion for teaching and for Medieval lit. He is one of the best English professors at NP.

Learning to read Old English shouldn't be fun. That it is, is a testament to Dr. Kempton. I actually enjoyed translating way more lines than I had to for my term paper. A gruesome amount of work, but a good time & leaves you w/ a sense of accomplishment & something to brag about at coctail parties.
