Professor Hobby is a nice man, but not very inspiring. There were some instances where I found him a bit hard to talk with whenever I had a problem with something. Also, he made his lectures a bit too boring and hard to follow and I actually enjoy doing math. Finally, BE PREPARED FOR THE FINAL EXAM! Trust me, there will be some trick questions!

A great professor who actually teaches! I wish the final was worth less.. he put one question on the final I didn't study at all because it differed from the sample finals up on blackboard. So 1 question wrong on a 35% test is a bit... unforgiving. But regardless of the grade, at least you learn in his class. And it can be applied to future courses

Very nice guy. A 1960's hippie. Made calculus clear even for a non-math guy like myself. Gives lots of partial credit on quizzes and tests. Only thing I didn't like was WebAssign homework. I don't need any more math classes, but if I did, I would take them with Dr Hobby.

With regards to lecture quality, prof. David Hobby definitely falls short. His lectures tend to be very boring and over-complicated. The only reason I'm really even doing well is because I had a fantastic AP Calculus teacher in senior year of highschool. As far as I know, most of the class is failing miserably and a lot of students are dropping out

Weekly quizzes are graded v fairly and partial credit is given too. A little error here and there will be forgiven. It's 3x a week and 1.5 hours long each time, so it gets very boring. You have to be there for that attendance grade, which does matter at the end. Webassign is tough, but easy enough to maneuver ("cheat"). Overall, a good professor.

Prof. Hobby is an excellent teacher. Be prepared to read the chapters before the class, do all the homework questions. He is very helpful during office hours. Challenging course work and he is very reasonable. Good Luck!

Prof Hobby is a great professor. He will always challenge you, dont expect anything to come easy. He is incredibly smart, but sometimes he will just go through stuff far to fast, but thats only because he expects you to be prepared (which i definitely was not, at most times). Overall, not a bad class, ive had more writing in other math class

He's a really nice guy, but he tries to explain really simple concepts in a complicated way. If you really study the textbook, you might be alright, but honestly.. why take a class with a teacher who isn't clear?

Very approachable and understandable, his grades are more than fair. he will give creedit if the calc itself is done correctly (say you mess up some simplifying he gives almost full credit). I went to his office hours before quizzes and that greatly helped. i highly recomend him. Not only is he a great guy, he is also a great teacher.

Very Laid Back. Fun class to attend and not difficult. 60% of grade is the weekly quizzes (get 1 sheet of notes for ea. quiz), 40% Final exam(1 sheet of notes from each previous quiz--so basically 11). So its a pretty easy class, you know the material but its not unrealistcally bashed into your head (i.e no calc etc) TAKE HOBBY!

Very challenging; don't try to ply him with sex and booze. Apparently he's ascetic and it won't work. Great teacher once you get to know him. Don't worry about the animals.

A really nice, affable guy. He tries really hard to be as helpful and is fair with the students. He's always willing to work with you. He knows his stuff but sometimes feels unprepared for class. He also sometimes gets lost in tangents during lecture. Overall, he's one of the best Math teachers at New Paltz. I'd recommend him as a teacher.

Very unprofessional and condescending. It's an embarassment for himself and the college... I have never seen a grown man ARGUE with a student in class Rude, unapproachable, and as a teacher, I know that you should work on a students level, not criticize them for asking questions. Very arrogant.

Overall a good teacher teaching some very difficult course material. Tests are fair and reflect the type of questions assigned for homework. When you ask for help outside of class he expects that you have at least attempted the problems before you meet
