Very charismatic professor. Two papers - fairly easy questions about Russia and US relations. Lectures help but easy enough questions if you know about Russian life (1984 kinda). One big problem: held a pot luck at his house. Not required but it's when/where you turn in the midterm, felt like a way to make us go. Sucks if socially anxious like me.

There are two papers (8-12 pages) and an optional EC assignment. The instructor has a nice slow pace and knows the subject matter. Unfortunately, he is somewhat unprepared and disorganized. Also, there is no course webcampus site. You need to integrate text material into your papers, but can get away with skimming. Take tons of notes for papers!

Dr. Shalin is very understanding and well informed on the subject matter. He can be a bit dry during lectures. His class requires two essays (midterm & final), 8-12 pages each and one week is given to complete. Attendance/participation is necessary for the essays as well as to earn "brownie points" his words not mine.

2 EXAMS. Semester exam is an 8 page essays. Great professor. Very thorough in his lectures. Participation points are accounted for. He is very nice and passionate at what he does. He can get a bit boring here and there but he also has his funny moments.

Dr. Shalin has a lot of great insight into what he teaches. He is brilliant and can talk about Classical Theory forever, w/o referring to notes. People who say he talks aimlessly weren't listening or don't know how to take notes in actual lectures. I wrote my papers w/my notes from class and did well. He cares about students and helps if needed.

I am really impressed with Professor Shalin! This man not only knows his stuff but puts into historical context. He is kindand patient. He is more than happy to meet with you to explain anything you may be remis about. He is a rare kind of professor that tells the whole story not just what's in the textbook. I HIGHLY recommend!

Great teacher, but can be a little boring. He seems as if he just wants to write for the rest of his life. He's wonderful to talk to and has seen a lot in his life. The class had only two essays (midterm and final). Heavy textbook use and reference.

Most of the time he talked about things not even relating to the class. It is impossible to take notes! Just show up and do the essays and it is an easy A.

I thought this class was great. He can be a little boring sometimes but for the most part he had my attention. The class is based on 2 essays a final and a midterm both in which are take home and pretty easy. You'll need to use the book for the essays but not really to read for class. He works around his students. Great guy!

I have strong opinions about this man. He is a smart man; a very intelligent and enthusiastic individual, but he does not care about the concerns of his student. This man is clearly only focused on his studies... Not much of a professor, but an excellent researcher. This man should be taken out of academia and placed in a solitary environment...

Good teacher if you have to take this course. He says attendance and participation count, but he doesn't know anyone's name, so that can't be true. Grade is based on mid-term and final, both take home, 8 page, essay. He lectures every class, so it can get boring. Overall a good experience, though.

Extremely boring professor who rambles without direction or structure. While the lectures are interesting, you'll find yourself wondering what application it has to, well, anything and what you'll be graded on. Midterm is seemingly random, and the final seemingly comes out of nowhere. Take another professor.

I really liked this teacher and class. I thought his lectures were interesting. I took this as a summer school class and there was an essay midterm and final. The essays were easy and you only had to use the book and lecture notes as sources. Very fair grading and also understanding if you miss a class as long as you tell him why you missed.

He is the most boring, monotoned proffessor at UNLV. Make sure you do well on the first test (study lectures and read chapters in the book twice). Paper is very fairly graded. The take home exam/paper is whats screws u. The best advice is to make sure you do well on the first exam.

ok so being honest with you all, be prepared for boring lectures. its not a hard class at all, but getting through each class just kills you. one thing though, he ocassionally takes random attendances at the end of classes so dont leave early although its not the most fun time you will have lolz

Extreamly boring to listen to. Says participation can help your grade, but he doesn't know anyone's name so I don't know how this could help. Only 3 assgnments: 7pg paper, one test (in class) and one take home essay test. Needs to figure out how to make this more interesting.
