Excellent Professor. Just do the work assigned and be an active learner and you should do fine. Seek help during office hours. Dr. Hellen is a good man with a kind spirit.

He seems to know the material but goes way to in depth for a simple problem. If you have him, read the text book. Yes, you can skip class, but substitute it for the material in the book as it clarifies what he talks about. Attempt the homework problems without assistance and read the book!

Horrible professor. I am a student that actually does my work, and this man is just not one of clarity. He does not care about his students doing well, he will in fact encourage you to drop the class from the very 1st day of class--he calls it not providing students with "false hope". Just stay as far away from this man as you can, TRUST ME.

Honestly, I would never take another class with this man. He's nice, but he's one of those professors that knows the information but can't relay it. He's not helpful also. If you don't understand he'll just tell you to drop it. I have made an A in all my sciences thus far and I had to drop this class. He can't teach at all, so take it elsewhere!!!

Awful, awful teacher. He's boring, his lab assignments are vague and unhelpful, and he doesn't teach, he just writes stuff and expects you to copy it to study it later.

Horrible teacher. Doesn't explain and talks to you as if you have a masters degree already. Doesn't seem willing to work with you at all. Do not take him because he is extremely fast paced and not interesting.

Really, really smug. Intolerably smug. His thick sarcasm and attempts at humiliation have no place in a classroom. His grading procedure does little to reward solid work with a wrong answer, and punishes right answers without displayed work. Lazy. Uses webassign to give lots of busywork. AVOID.

Organic chemistry was a breeze compared to this class, and Dr. Hellen is not a very good teacher. You just go to class and copy down what he writes on the board, there isn't any teaching.

Hardest class i have took at uncg. Be prepared to work your butt off and still not get the grade you deserve. His exams are pretty much impossible no matter how long you study. Should not be teaching a beginning physics class.

Awesome professor. People who find his class to be too difficult are definitely not reinforcing class notes with textbook reading. If you take the time to actually study for the class, you won't struggle. Regardless of which physics you take, you'll have complex problems to work through. However, Hellen takes the time to explain things in depth.

A really nice guy, but a pretty horrible professor. His tests were slightly ridiculous, but my main problem with him was his grading. If you made a small mistake at the beginning of the show-your-work problems, that was it; no credit for the rest of the problem, it was just all wrong from there. However, he was nice, and willing to try to explain.

Dr. Hellen is a nice guy and I am sure a great Phyiscs professor but he doesn't belong teaching INTRO to Physics, as like many others have said his demand is way too high, this was a lab class and his quizzes were harder than the lecture tests! If your a pre-health needing basic phyics, stay clear from this professor as he will only harm your GPA.

Great professor. Definitely a hard class, but if you do the work, and especially the WebAssign, it's a great class. Dr. Hellen is always willing to help so long as you at least put out an effort.

Excellent TEACHER. He teaches you ways to approach problems, not just to memorize equations. Anybody that says this class is impossible did not try. The class was fast paced and covered alot of material, but was managable with a little effort. Nice guy, but kinda quirky. Made for interesting lectures.

Dr. Hellen expects you to be clever. He has no interest in slackers or mindless chimps. As a physics major who as had several classes with him, I say he's one of the best teachers at UNCG. And no, I wasn't always good at math or physics. Dr Hellen actually makes it interesting.

Dr. Hellen is by far the BEST Physics professor I've ever had, and I've tried to take the class twice before now. He's not the easiest teacher, but no one promised that Calculus-based Physics would be easy. Dr. Hellen takes time to explain even basic material, and is very helpful outside of class.
