His classes were interesting, but he has no idea how to teach. The things on the test were things that were never discussed in class. He's very much an actor and I think he's more interested in entertaining the class during lectures than actually teaching us so we can pass test/the class. And if you're bad at math like me, definitely steer clear

Nice guy but horrible teacher. Doesnt have a blog. Doesnt post grades. Doesnt teach, just shows you that he knows how to work the problems . So many people fail the tests and he doesnt care and doesnt curve.

Do not take this class if you have not had Calculus before. This is REAL CALCULUS. You have three tests and you make an F if you do not do the problems exactly the way he wants it. Very hard class with very little true instruction. He is available during office hours but doesn't give any help.

Dr. McDowell is honestly a good person and I give him credit for that. However, he teaches the class as if you already know the material and if you ever ask for help, he indirectly makes you feel like you should know the material. It's really hard to catch up when you miss a concept and I would only recommend him if you already have calc experience

One of the most energetic people I have ever seen. Truly loves what he teaches. Classes don't have a textbook which is a blessing and a curse.

VERY energetic, great personality. I love Dr. McDowell as a person, and he's a great professor who really knows the material. However, his class is INCREDIBLY difficult...even Discrete which is supposed to be fairly gen ed was incredibly difficult. While I feel like I learned a lot of theoretical concepts, I have no practical application.

Dr. McDowell is kind of a mixed bag. He's amusing and good at teaching, but he can be rather intolerant in a way that verges on outright meanness. I feel like he doesn't really care about his students nearly as much as he tries to project. He's good at teaching, but don't expect him to be understanding if you have problems or need much help.

Dr. McDowell is probably the most talented professor I have ever met. His antics are hilarious, yet it adds to the class discussion. His teaching style is unique and very interactive. He discusses every problem with the entire class at once. His class isn't easy, but I will leave the class with a fulfilled sense of knowing what he taught.

I love McDowell! He is so energetic and is the most passionate teacher here! His material is hard and he gives a lot of crazy theorems but he is VERY good at teaching it so it levels out. Take McDowell.

Dr. McDowell is hilarious and gives very clear lectures. I ended up doing very well in the class and I'm not really a "math person". A word of caution though-- if you've never had a calculus class in high school you may struggle. That was the general impression I got from people who had never seen calculus.

I can't say enough good things about Dr. McDowell. He is a wonderful teacher, you can really tell he loves what he does, and he is great at it! He does his own original songs about math - very entertaining! He is always very clear when presenting material. Communication is very important in his class. I could not have asked for a better Calc prof!

Awesome prof! Simplifies stuff really well for people who don't do so well at math. Very helpful during office hours. Will occasionally break out into song during class so be prepared. :)

Also took Calc II with him. His lectures are fairly entertaining and he provides good motivation for the results. There are at times hilarious moments. One of my favorite professors. If you need help, just go see him.

Great teacher! Loved his class! He gets really excited and makes class fun! He gives extra credit points for showing up in class-- how much better does it get??
