Professor Pullum's Intro to Linguistics class has convinced me that I absolutely and totally love linguistics. Yes, he's a bit of a stuffy old man with a funny accent, but he's a great teacher and I'm sad that he's gone. Take one of his classes if he comes back!

Comment:

Although meant to be an overview of English Grammar, this class assumed the students already had a background in linguistics. Pullum did belatedly slow the pace down and was reasonably fair but it being my first class in linguistics I didn't understand a lot. I wish I had taken it after taking Syntax. A real shame.

I don't know why they put Pullum into teaching Unix class. He's a linguistic professor, and he may know some stuff about unix operating system, but not good enough to teach. He is funny, but he is not nice.

Pullum is one of the best professors this school has to offer. Excellent lecturer with a fantastic British sense of humor. The Unix homework was often very challenging but extremely rewarding to complete. If you see any class taught by him, take it - you will not be disappointed.

I think it's important to note that Pullum is a very highly educated linguist, worth whatever time he's got to spend with you (which is generally not much). Valuable resource to the UCSC Ling department. Take every assignment seriously.

Amusing, breaks topics into understandable pieces and his tests and hws are fair. Note of advice: take him seriously. He doesn't sugarcoat. Fair B- in the class after bombing a quiz, being ill for another but recieved a very condescending, painful eval. Still class worth it b/c of what i learned.

Great class, great teacher. Really expanded my horizions and brought UNIX out of obscurity, which is really nice if you use OS X a lot. Assignments were interesting and fun and his grading was more based on the final project than anything else (especially quizzes), something I agree on.

i took phonetics, and it was a very fun class, although it was 8am. he's a very by-the-rules kinda guy, but with a quirky sense of humor. he's the kind of professor who doesn't accept excuses or make ups, but he's a very informative, interesting speaker.

Geoff is one of the best teachers I've had. He manages to work humor into all of his lectures, while still teaching clearly and concisely. Easy to follow and with loads of practice to get us working. I still find uses for what I learned in this class.
