Comment:

I had Dr. West for Elementary Latin I. She is a hard professor to please and her teaching style is not very clear. She is also very strict in class. Many students feel intimidated to speak up or ask questions. Some students like her teaching style but I would not recommend her to too many students.

Comment:

Dr. West is an amazing professor and a truly beautiful woman. She helped me keep going when I thought I should just quit, and I learned so much with her class. If people don't like her style, perhaps it is because they have lost touch with why it is we are learning Latin--in order to understand the significance of what these authors were saying.

Didn't see what the big deal was, she's not a bad teacher. We move a little slow, but I wouldn't run from a class because she's teaching it. She can be helpful if you actually seek help.

She is nuts! The class is slow, she is a power freak, she hates athletes, seriously tried to ban sports from the school altogether. I hate this lady, she isn't helpful and a terrible grader. She expects you to know things you would not or should not ever know.

She is very helpful outside of class, if you need assistance with translation or with course planning. Class moves slowly and is not very interesting, but she does like to take tangents in which she compares ancient situations to contemporary ones. Once she told us that a consul is like a someone from "Battlestar Galactica."

For masochists. I cannot express the pain this class made me endure. I yearned for death. She does not teach--anything-- ever. You teach yourself, and hope you understand, because she doesn't understand, and can't help you. I passed 101 through extensive background in LAT, FRN, and SPN. Then I left UD for a better Classics department. RUN LIKE HELL

One of the most intimidating professors at Dallas, very upfront about her biases, very clever reader of Greek and Latin literature. A rough personality, an easy grader, and a deparmental chair who will go to the mat for you when you need it.
