Jim is great. The first professor in a very long time that got me thinking and engaged me in the material. He is really funny and likes metaphors. Be ready to think outside the box.

Very poor professor. Never lectured, so you learn very little. Glitchy online quizzes. Some films were enjoyable, many not. Graded poorly with no feedback and lower scores than expected. Was not helpful nor understanding when asked about assignments and scores. Don't expect an A, even if you work hard, unless you can read his mind.

Comment:

Really cares about his students but can be disorganized and has a terrible memory. He tries to make students think for themselves - which they don't always appreciate. Has an old-fashioned sense of manners so say "please" and "thank you", show up, do the work and you'll get a good grade.

I enjoyed most of this class. The movies we watched were really good but the radio segments were really boring. He gets really mad if you don't pay attention. Only four assignments for the whole class.

Film Comedy Around the World - Great movies. He really enjoys watching and discussing them with us. He leaves some stuff unexplained, like the comedy techniques and character types. Keep up with quizzes, attendance, and writing assignments! Very important that you do the writing especially! Overall, it was fun to watch funny movies twice a week.

Jim is an interesting person. Jim is not a good instructor, he can be very general with his assignments which leads to wtf? moments when things are due but he classes are fun and he has all sorts of stories to share. goes off on tangents like no other and so work is not always completed in his class =P

One of the worst professors I've ever had. Plays favorites. If he doesn't like what you have to say, he just pretends not to have heard you. Does not go over assignments at all. You basically teach yourself everything. Did not say there was an additional $40 fee for film. Avoid him if you can, which is near impossible if your a theatre major. :(

McHugh was awful. Incredibly arrogant and condecending, and worst of all, an incredible bore and LOVED the sound of his own voice. Does not communicate any of his information well. The worst teacher I have had at HSU.

He is condescending to students and teachers alike. Grades you based on personal likes/dislikes. Tenured so unfortunately no amount of complaints seems to matter. Try to avoid his classes at all costs. He may be a good professional but as a teacher, he talks down to you and abuses his position of authority.

If Jim isn't interested in the subject of your questions, it's hard to get answers. Esp. to electrical issues (which is bad for people who are just learning lighting). Also, beware if you need a letter of recommendation. I know for a fact that he flaked out on a letter for number of students who worked very hard for him (as in over four).

Jim McHugh is super hot, looks kinda like Star Trek's Captain Picard. He is knowledgeable, helpful, fun, and goes the extra mile for his students. Make it so #1!
