I took her math (21) lecture and it felt like an online class. even though everything is taught online by a website called Aleks you still had to show up to class. Aleks was the most annoying and time consuming thing ever. you have to put in an average of an hour every night answering math problems and possibly longer if you dont reach topic goal

Comment:

I took her MATH34 class (my first math class as a college student) and she was an amazing professor. She was very clear with her lectures and was prepared in every class. She is extremely friendly and gave us tips for school, real life finances, treats, etc. The course work is fantastic too, everything you wish you had learned in high school.

Homework each class but most just a few problems- more like graded practice. She is a fun professor in class and will go off topic which is nice sometimes. Easy to talk to and very compassionate and understanding. One of my favorites.

Had trouble in her class. Doesn't care about helping her students. Tests are hard and super important to pass the class. All the assignments in the class are worth 1000 points. The two test are worth 500 together. Do recommend taking her if you are a bad tester. Will not take again. Class peers also having issues, she got upset instead of helping.

Terrible teacher. Places a ridiculous amount of importance on the midterm & final. After the midterm, she sent out a mass email telling us to drop the class if we weren't able to take the test b/c there was no way to pass class without it. She doesn't do any actual teaching. Just moves grades from Aleks to PSU site. Will NEVER take her again!

I had Mrs. Smeltzer for an online intermediate algebra class. I'm incredibly bad at all things math, but Mrs. Smeltzer was EXTREMELY helpful, nice, and patient. She managed to make her math class fun and held weekly meetings if you need more help. I definitely recommend Mrs. Smeltzer's class - I wish she was teaching other math courses!

She is a pretty good teacher, clear, helpful, but she walks around in her barefeet when she teaches. which is a little wierd. most of the questions on the quizes are in the homework,so do the homework.

She is very clear and grades fairly. She will give partial credit on some things and an occasional extra credit assignment. Only bad thing is that she is stuck in her ways and won't change policies if asked. She introduces new material right before a test which can be confusing.

Joan Smeltzer is one of the most helpful math instructors I've ever had in college. It can't get much better. If you have the opportunity, give her a shot! You will enjoy her class, and even if you're not a math whiz, she will clarify all things to help!
