The class was fine. Not super exciting. For the semester we only had 4 grades. A quiz, an essay, a midterm and a final. Although I took notes they did not really help with the tests, or essay. The book was not used but can be helpful with the essay questions. I do enjoy that he gives you whats going to be on the test two weeks in advance.

Teacher did not give any instruction, ever. He only critiques for hours. Don't do it. He favors some students and picks on others for no apparent reason.

He is a very good professor. There are only 3 grades. Two essay Exams and one paper. The essay exams are very difficult, however he does give you 4 essay prompts beforehand and out of these 4 he will choose 2 of them. He strongly encourages students to prepare theses essays outside of class and let him take a look at them before the exams.

Really good teacher! Very Helpful and very Knowledgeable! I really enjoyed his class. I had him for painting 3 and it was twice a week. One of the days was a work day and never had to go to class. Does Expect you to come on the other day bc he and the class critique your work. One must paint alot in this class. He expects one work per-week.

Pretty tough teacher. You learn a lot. Tests are pretty tough. Must listen and take LOTS of notes. I should've recorded the lectures-he covers a lot in a small amount of time. With only two tests & one essay it was pretty tough to make a good grade. Also, missing part of a class because of being sick was tough to catch up. So don't miss a minute.

John Markowitz is an amazing man! I've taken him for Survey and American Art as well as Painting. I will never miss an oppertunity to take his class. He makes you want to learn and succede. He will even proof read your essays and papers, how much better could it get?? He is the best Art History and Painting professor at UWF.

Nice guy but I didn't like his teaching style: lectures and slides. Doesn't take questions. Absences will hurt you b/c you take about 3pgs of notes every class. Only 3 grades! Each exam is over 4 chapters and only 1/10 of your info and images will be on the test. No reviews. However, it is a Gordon Rule Writing class with no essays.

I'm taking the non-majors class with Markowitz and I love his teaching methods! Rather than bore us with color wheels and lectures, Markowitz lets his students dive right into painting and learn what they learn through trial and error. Awesome prof!

John Markowitz is an exhuberant man with many exciting ideas about the art of painting. He can sometimes get carried away by his enthusiasm, but in the end to the right core of students is very inspirational. His primary focus is on work ethic, and those who paint for one or two hours a week will fail, those who paint for one or two hours a day will do well. His interest is in growth, experimentation, and critical analysis. These are all key aspects of painting. Trust him, take his advice, and you will soar

I was really excited about this class and was kinda let down. He is a really nice man, but his lectures were sooooo boring. I felt the work he assigned was busy work. If you plan on taking this be prepared to spend your days cutting 2x2 inch squares an awful lot. Other than that-easy A. just come to class and do the work.

I just rated R. Markowitz instead of John. Sorry for any confusion. But anyway... I also had him for both Surveys...He really makes you work to the best of your ability and expects your genuine dedication to his classes. I learn so much from him...he's amazing.

very nondiscript and vague in what he wants. aslo not open to idead you paint his way and his way only, if you dont do apstraction you fail. pathetic had an outside teacher critique us and said "looks like there is some kind of sickness at the school you all paint the same"
