Honestly don't do it... Material is all over the place and teaching is not great. Constantly contradicts himself, essays make no sense at all and is SUCH a harsh grader. Class is boring, either whole class lecture or you answer questions about reading (high school??). All in all felt like a waste of time AND hurt my GPA. Nice guy but not worth it.

This is definitely not an easy class. But if you enjoy economics, finance, etc., then it can be a good choice. There is a lot of reading. Two essays. A few journals. A presentation. About as much work as any FYS. Discussion is a big deal for him. Tough class, but I'm glad I took it.

I took this class without having taken econ, and have had relative success with hard work. It's more about econ theory but I had to put a lot of work in to get on the level of other students. He makes the class really interesting and the topic is interesting, so it was fun doing the work and reading was never a chore, but be prepared to put in work

He is a great person and is passionate about economics. If you haven't had econ before don't take this class. Ideally one should have taken or be taking Macro to do well in this class. There are a lot of tough readings and he is never clear about expectations. Class participation is necessary. There are a lot of papers and the final paper is 40%.

Wight's classes can get really boring at times and he goes off on many tangents. His grading is pretty arbitrary and you never know what he wants from you. He assigns readings for EVERY class and you really have to think a lot for his papers. Avoid at all costs.

Not too hard of a class. Lots of reading for homework but if you keep on top of it, you'll do well. Quizzes and tests aren't too hard but they aren't easy either. Can choose to do final exam or research paper. He's a pretty nice guy who is enthusiastic about the material he teaches.

really nice guy, calls on everyone each class and does not care if you are wrong, just wants you to try and participate. counts on you to do the homework and learn the concepts, and spends class reinforcing the material. has online quizzes that can be difficult, but tests arent too bad and the essays are easy. offers tons of extra credit

Comment:
This class is not the class to take if you are looking for a basic introduction to economics. He assigns three extra books that no other class has and ignores the textbook. If you miss class you're basically screwed. All the homework he assigns he expects you to teach yourself and then he gets confused by why no one could do what he never taught

Take his Econ 101 class as early as you can. You are in college to learn lessons for life and to meet people that inspire you to question people's opinions. He is one of these people. The class itself is not rocket science as long as you pay attention. Prof. Wight is kind and goes out of his way to help every student succeed.Definitely recommended!

This class is not for lazy people. That said, Dr. Wight is absolutely amazing--he is one of the best professors at UR. As long as you do the homework (it's "optional" but you're only hurting yourself not doing it) and pay attention in class you should be fine. I would recommend this class to everyone, no matter what they're majoring in.

If you want to take econ to full-fill your requirement stay as far away as possible from this class. Tried hard to understand economics but I will never get it. Calls on everyone every class and his quizzes are impossible. Seems to be overly friendly and says thank you to everything you do. If you plan on being an econ major you will learn a lot

Good professor, loves economics... Will call on you in class at least once, lives by class participation... Homework is not required... online quizzes.. and LOTS of extra credit, doing the extra credit can increase ur grade by at least a whole letter grade. If you don't like participating in class don't take Wight...

Great professor. He teaches using the socractic method, so if you can't take being called on at least once every class he may not be for you. Dr. Wight incorporates real-world examples which really bring the subject to life. Although he may sometimes appear condescening, he really wants you to succeed. Loves trick questions. Highly reccommended.
