Comment:

Most students take this as a GE course, but leslie makes it more interesting by relating everything back to our lives and why it is important for us to become educated on this. Her tests are a bit tricky, but if you go to class and go to office hours you will do fine. She's the reason why I am now a bio major.

Comment:

I really loved my Professor! Her lectures may be a little dull at times, but on the whole she does a great job explaining the topics. I had her as my lab instructor and she always was helpful and understanding. It's not really necessary to use the book that often as long you make sure you attend the labs and most of the lectures. Take notes!

Comment:

I had Leslie for Human Genetics; it satisfies DCG requirements, but really, I wouldn't recommend the course for non-bio majors hoping for easy GE. The exams can get pretty technical (i.e., DNA replication/transcription) and the fact that I'm in biology definitely helped. However, Leslie is always willing to offer assistance to those who want it.

Worst biology teacher ever, It was like I was taking genetics back in 1971, she does not seem sure of what she teaches....very unclear on what is tested and teaches as if it is a easy style GE class but tests as if you are majoring in Bio... would not recomend this professor to anyone.

This is my second class with Vandermolen and I'm really enjoying it. She goes out of her way to make study sessions and get student feedback, and is easily reached during her office hours. Though her classes are heavily textbook-based I have not once opened my book. If you pay attention in class and take notes, you'll be fine.

stubborn, will not find a new way to teach something. Does not answer most of your questions. If you have a problem with the class and you E-mail her she won't e-mail you back. Doesn't teach straight from the book so its hard to find answers for the quiz/test (ask her). Study guides are slightly helpful. Nice person, but not a good teacher. GoodLuk

Leslie is a wonderful teacher. She's funny, energetic, and uses great models to help with her lectures (which are well delivered and thorough, if not a little tangential). Tests are difficult, but honestly it's refreshing to have a teacher with high expectations. I've never enjoyed myself more in a lecture-based class, would highly recommend her.

I disagree with people saying not to take 304 without the prerequisite; I didn't take it, I'm usually terrible in science classes, and I got an A. It's confusing sometimes, but she makes it possible for us non-science majors to understand. As long as you go to class, take good notes, follow the study guide and do all the assignments you can pass.

I also did not take Bio as a prereq. I have not taken bio since high school and I am extremely lost in the class. She teaches as if it is a major class for science majors. WAY TOO HARD. I am not a science major and I just want to graduate!

Do not take Human Genetics if you haven't taken the prerequisite class (which I think is just General Biology). I took Bio in highschool so I thought I would be fine, and I'm fairly smart so i thought i'd be fine. Never have I been so lost in a class. I'm warning you. Don't do it!

I absolutely LOVE Leslie (!) and the class was pretty fun, too. I wish all of my courses could be instructed by this lecturer. She's a delight, which is nice since the workload is fairly high. She makes the course enjoyable, which was a relief for a botany major like me who'd been avoiding it for years. This lady is the bees knees. Thanks Leslie!

Really enjoyed the class. She goes at a fair pace. Recommend taking a laptop to lectures. (Lots of information to put down in 50 min.) Take good notes, and you'll be fine. Be prepared for lab quizzes. They're easy if you do the ?s and read the intros.

Bio is a tough class! there is no doubt about it. you actually have to study. Study groups are best. Ive only done one study group and i got a 91% on my last midterm, which is amazing! lab is easy, you just have to study a little. But just come prepared to do some studying and you can easily get a C in this class.

Great teacher! She has this super dry sense of humor that is just awesome. She always has good prepared lectures. She often brings in optional information that has to do with the subject just for fun, but its super interesting. Definitely recommend her.

She definitely knows what she is talking about and is a very good teacher. Even with a large lecture class she was able to teach the material very well and she even got me to love biology! It's best to attend all her lectures and take alot of notes because that's what majority of the exams are on. Just keep up with the work and you"ll be fine.

LESLIE IS AMAZING!!! the lab instructor i have, not so much, but leslie is great. she really cares about her students and is the best science teacher i've ever encountered. It's a lot of work, but completely worth it.

She's really nice, knows a Lot about biology. Lots of note-taking, she's sometimes pretty funny too. Overall, I have to say that her class is challenging. You need to read the textbook, it was a hard class.
