Comment:

Currently in his class typing this sitting in a lecture where he is just rephrasing types of hatred. He never relates his lectures to the multiple readings we do. I'm not done with the course but it is mid-November and the only grade we have is our take home midterm essay and we have not gotten them back after he had them a week.

This professor has charisma but nothing else that is required of a beneficial prof. Extremely tangential, hard to follow, disgustingly bias, and creates an uncomfortable environment for students that don't agree with his various political declarations that are consistently present in his lectures. He talks about Foucault a lot as well.

This professor doesn't know how to teach to the room. His lectures are unorganized and he constantly goes on tangents that are irrelevant or don't push the conversation forward. It's miserable. What everyone's saying how his lack of open-mindedness is true and I wish I switched out of the class when I could've. He just likes to hear his own voice.

By far the worst professor I have ever had. His lectures were nonsensical. I learned nothing whatsoever. He had no respect for proper pronouns or non-binary genders which is a real problem for a gender and sexuality studies professor.

I had Professor Guzman for my Great Social Thinkers class, and was extremely let down, and not to mention, quite mad. Manolo's lectures are long, and he goes off on tangents that have absolutely nothing to do with the topic. As far as grading goes, expect to get a D on everything turned in. If he doesn't like you, you'll know. Good luck, seriously.

I don't suggest taking him if you're someone with your own opinions because all he wants is students that agree with him and are able to repeat back whatever his interpretation of the readings were. He's funny in class and obviously knows his stuff but his grading is ridiculous and there's a ton of reading for the class.

I took Sexuality Studies with him and I found the class very confusing. He made the class uncomfortable if everyone didn't agree with his views and he was a tough grader. I wouldn't recommend this class.

He's a powerful speaker, he's hilarious, he's sharp as a tack but I wouldn't cross him. Definitely knows his stuff and he's very opinionated. He's a bit of a hot head but take what you can from him. I'd rather have a professor with too much personality than too little. The numbers dont show it but he is a great professor.

Manolo was great - but as an intro gender and sexuality studies class it was a bit difficult. I felt that most kids closed off after he would say certain things and then they lost everything. Just be open to what he's got to say and take everything with a grain of salt. After all, it's sociology, not fact.

Very nice if you don't disagree with him on anything but the moment you stand up to him or disagree he turns on you and will belittle you and humiliate you in front of the class. Pretty bad. Pretentious. I took SOC101 but I swear half the semester it was Gay History 101 and Gender Studies.

Manolo is honestly the best professor at MMC. All of my other professors have been a joke so far. Manolo is extremely intelligent, and is always willing to help if you do not understand something. If you pay attention, write your papers correctly and participate it is a guaranteed A+. I HIGHLY recommend his class, he's fabulous!

Ok so I came into this class and seen all these reviews and was so nervous. Manolo is nice and funny and not mean at all like comments here say. His readings are a little hard to understand but its pretty interesting.HOW TO SURVIVE: PARTICIPATE. I took SOC 330 and SOC 230 with Guzman(BEST teacher at MMC) The key is 2 SIT IN THE FIRST TWO ROWS OF CLASS ALWAYS, DO not to miss class or prior notice, NEVER BE LATE. I even signed uo his classes so much that I am even signed up for him this summer. KEY2anA: SHOW RESPECT(NO CELLFONES), do ur readings n take advantage of our of class meetings : )

I took Dr. Guzman's race and ethnicity class and I have to disagree with most of the posts here. Yes, he is not easy, however you LEARN. If you want to challenge yourself and actually learn something then take his class. You'll get another perspective on many things. DO THE PAPER HIS WAY... I repeat... HIS WAY... And you should be fine.

Watch out for Professor Guzman. I took a class on women with him this semester, and he blatantly disrespects his students views when they differ from his own. He has very strongly radical views on the nature of society, and while I can see where his argument comes from, the way he presents them are belittling and arrogant. Avoid him if possible.
