He is very passionate about what he is teaching and it makes it fun to be in class with him. He also plays lots of music so its fun to listen to that.

Dr. Rice is a very nice man; genuinely cares for students and likes to make them happy. The Rock generation jins class was interesting, and I ended up learning a lot. It's nice to walk into a classroom and sit down to listen to music instead of for a test. However, Dr. Rice needs to cool it on the political talk and rants. It made me uncomfortable.

Jazz with Rice is pretty easy with tests that you can cram for right before and get an A. Lectures are boring but you get to listen to some music, so they're still worth it. There is a group video project, that is easy, just don't procrastinate!

Dr. Rice basically lives for jazz. He's really passionate about it and that translates into really interesting lectures. There were five tests (you do a review session before each one where he gives you everything you need to know), one group project, and a final. Take good notes and pay attention to the music, and the class will be easy enough.

5 exams, concert report, and one group project. This class is very interesting and he really loves to teach it. Very easy and straightforward.

Class was often boring but he has a passion for what he teaches. I went to class every day, took notes, skimmed the text, made the study guides and crammed right before tests (for maybe 2 hours) - but it was easy. A few questions on the exams might trip you up, but there's no reason not to get at least a B. 1 simple group project. No sweat!

The class is boring, but fairly easy. The listening quizzes can be hard if you wait until the last minute to study for them. He gives you a study guide for each test/quiz which is helpful, but sometimes misleading. All of his quizzes are the same format, so don't let him fool you when he tries to tell you differently.

He might be good for a class like Jazz Perspectives, but for a class for music majors trying to learn a subject as important as Music History, he's not the best. He messes up important dates, gets off track during class, and his directions for assignments are not very clear. The tests are pretty easy as long as you study the online book quizzes.

Dr. Rice is so nice. He has a true love for jazz & loves sharing it with students. Really cares about students. Out of class early almost everyday. His lectures were pretty interesting - variety between PP & videos. Gives a list of what you need to know for tests. It is not difficult to do well in his class - if you want an A it is possible.

Professor was extremely unorganized. The class was interesting at first, but later became very monotoned boring. He reads off of powerpoints for each of his lectures-although they don't have much significance towards the test. READ THE BOOK! He doesn't use it but he copies his test from it. I got a C.

I'm not interested in jazz but I learned a lot in this class. It's boring and dry but he usually lets us out of class 10 minutes early. Be sure to read the book because a lot of his tests questions come from the text. He's a nice guy who knows his stuff and I would recommend taking this class for your fine arts requirement.

He was a pretty good teacher. His lessons keep you interested in the beginning. After a while they do begin to bore you but the class overall is not hard and easy to study for outside of class. plus he is a nice guy and is very energetic

I took Music & Pol Protest w him. He is a really good person and professor. This class was one of the easiest that I have taken at Truman. Grading was based on tests, presentations, and a final research paper. The tests were easy if you simple read class notes & the book. He is very encouraging as well! Kept the material interesting too: fun music

While his lectures get really boring, it's an easy class and an easy A. he really does care about his students, so it doesn't make it too terrible of a class. just show up, sleep, listen to music and you will get an A

Not only was this man never organized or ready for class in any way, he regularly stated information that was clearly incorrect. He takes every test from the online testing aid that applies to the book, he just copies and pastes, not doing any amount of work for it. If this were not a required class, no one would take it.

Not a difficult class, but Dr. Rice was often unorganized. It became very annoying. We had 3 tests and a research paper. Class periods were spent discussing readings and watching various films. If you aren't interested in the topic, then do not take his class. It just isn't worth it.

Dr. Rice was not a good teacher. He was unable to effectively convey any amount of knowledge to the class. He didn't teach anyone anything and when I approached him with questions, he was normally unwilling to answer them, and told me to seek out the advice of other students, not even pointing me towards a book or other resource.

He's a nice guy, but his lectures are impossible to follow, he absolutely refuses to answer anyone's questions, and his tests just try to trick you, rather than test your knowledge.

Dr. Rice is very nice. I thought listening journals were fairly easy and as long as your writing improves over the semester you're grade should be fine.
