had one student comment to me that he studied with Mark for four years, never practiced and Mark never seemed to care. Purchases equipment students have no interest in, poor conductor.... Uses school equipment and resources for his own outside jobs then lies to the college about it...he should be let go

Oh goodness. I transferred to Grinnell, after taking band at another college, and the difference was incredible. Mark Dorr is truly perplexing. He never seems to let us forget all of the acolades he has acquired over the years, but when it comes to teaching, he is absolutely terrible. Our band sucked, and not because we had a lack of talent.

Mark is an inflexible, irrational, megalomanaical blowhard. He's all smiles and friendlies until you ask anything of him at all, and then he acts like you're the jerk. He talks about how the band is for the students by the students, until the students actually try to have a say in the policies or repetoire. Try Orchestra or Singers instead

Mark knows his stuff and is a wonderful musician and teacher, but it wont take long to realize that he is very selfish. He's under the illusion that his ensembles are the most important thing on campus and that he should be your top priority. He can be a real jerk, but if you don't let him walk all over you, you can learn a lot about percussion.

Mark might only compliment the 1st players, but honestly, what's he supposed to say to most of the non-first players who aren't that good: 'Hey so and so, way to suck!' Mark is really friendly and really nice, I can't say anthying bad about him.

Although he's a very talented percussionist and seems to work well with them, he often neglects most of the band except them and the primary players. If you don't play 1st part or percussion, don't expect him to be of much help to you. Also a bit of a drama queen/ egomaniac.

I used to like Mark until I found out that at his core he is self serving and mainly interested in impressing people. He also overcompliments to the point where you know he can't possibly mean it and just wants you to like him. Not a very good conductor either.

I agree-stay the hell away from him the week before a concert because he's really cranky and stressed. Otherwise he's really sweet and loves music. His conducting is good, but rehearsal can get really slow and boring.
