When I think of teachers, she's the first and most important to come to mind. I chose her as advisor. I've never had a bigger influence on my life, 10+ year film career, work ethic, standards of excellence. Dr. Thiel was polarizing because those who didn't want to work didn't have patience for her, and the feeling was mutual. I love and miss you!!

Easily my favorite professor at GW. I love this woman, she literally changed my life. I still check in on her from time to time. Because of her I went into writing full time. She's unorthodox in how she teaches and she's tough but if you do the work she'll go extra lengths to help you hone your craft.

Dr. Joan Theil was a very bad to minorities. She even insinuated that I will not be able to go to graduate school when I was at GWU. Unfortunately for her, I went to graduate school and graduated. She would absolutely refuse to offer any help when I took her class. The course I took from her was useless in the real world. I regretted taking the class

I graduated in 1988 with a BA in Radio/TV. Still after all this time I find myself telling stories about Dr. Thiel, passing along her wisdom (Murphy was an optimist!) and relying on the discipline and knowledge gained from her. She can get emotional - don't let it throw you! She truly cares and will do anything to help you succeed.

Thirty years later, Joan Thiel was one of the best professors I ever had. She was very tough, but I always detected a smile just below the surface. She is one of those people that made a difference in my life.

Harsh personality and teaches using antiquated technology. Doesn't understand modern editing and is sometimes incomprehensible from random anger. Definitely a hard worker and cares about the subject, though she just doesn't seem to know how to share ideas or keep up with the industry effectively.

The best teacher I had at GWU. Devoted to her students and profession, Dr. Thiel successfully prepared me for a career in the media. If GWU administration had only been more respectful of her skills and commitment they would be seeing alumni donations from me today.

Couldnt be a more antiquated teacher or person. The only thing she seems to hate more than students is mistake prone students. Set in her ways and you better catch on to that quick.

I took her class as a visiting student in Fall 1996. She's tough (it only *feels* impossible). Her lessons have served me well for my career. I still refer to her "isms" and occasionally pull out my Zettl text book. Most of all, I constantly encounter professionals that would be better at their jobs if they'd been subjected to Dr. Thiel ;)

She's tough. But knows the subject matter well. You can tell she cares about the subject. It's up to the student to pull their own weight to learn, though she provides helpful feedback when asked. it's been a while since I've been in college, but she is definitely a memorable professor. I still remember the book we used was Sight and Sound.

Dr. Thiel was by far the most influential professor I ever had at GW. When you get past her rough exterior, she is really a person who cares about her students. Yes, she made me cry many times when I was in her classes (I graduated the RTV program in 1997), but the lessons learned have gotten me through many frustrating experiences in the real world of television. Yes, you will work your ass off, yes you will curse her left and right, but you will NEVER forget her and someday you'll thank her for being her.

Dr. Theil might have been hell to deal with in class (and scary, and she'll probably make you cry at least once), but after graduating, you realize you couldn't deal in this world without what she taught you. Yay Vectors!
