Comment:

First physics at UST, was great. Marty was very personable and helpful. The content is tough, but I lived in his office hours and he answered every question I had. His lectures were great, he kept energy up. He genuinely cares and wants you to understand the concepts.

Comment:

Hands down one of the best professors you will ever have. His class is difficult-2.5 hours of lecture three days a week with about 3 hours of homework each night in packets. As for Marty, he is at his best one on one. He has the ability to understand something and translate it into 3 or 4 different view points. He wants you to actually learn! :)

Marty is super nice, but this class is 2.5 hours, 3x a week. Its a long time to sit and listen. Material is very tough, but he is really helpful 1 on 1. Honestly, this class sucks, but he will do your best to get you through it.

Marty is a wonderful professor. He cares about students as people, not just a grade or a number. He'll help you one on one, all you have to do is stop by his office. Open door more than happy to help. He has tough problems, but he gives a lot of partial credit. Participating in class is a must. Don't leave the homework for last minute.

TAKE MARTY!!! He is amazing as both a prof and a person. He is always so approachable and willing to help always. Homework packets due everyday of class, a couple quizzes, and 6 exams but thats typical of any PHYS class. You will NOT regret taking him! Tests are not that bad if you study and know your stuff.

Marty is a great teacher, if you spend time working on the problems and understanding the concepts, you will do well (if you know your calc!) I have used the book rarely, but marty does such a great job teaching the concepts its fine. Cool, short, informal labs, and lots of work time to ask questions. I would highly recommend him!! :)

Like the other poster, I cannot understand why Marty is so highly rated here. His lectures are uninspired, long, and boring. He's good about helping you, but personally I just could not stand this class. He basically encourages cheating by leaving the classroom for the entire duration of the tests, maybe that's why the slackers like him?

The course work is the hard part. But, Marty is hands down one of, if not, THE BEST professors or teachers I have ever had. He is more than understanding, he loves what he does, he's funny, he tries so hard for you to understand. If you ever get the chance, take him.

I got behind early on in this class and it was really really hard to get back after that, HOWEVER, MARTY IS AWESOME! And I'm sure if I'd gotten more 1 on 1 help from him I'd have done better. He's really understanding, kind, funny. The tests suck so much. But like I said, if you really keep on top of it, you'll probably be ok. Definitely take him.

Marty is a great prof. He's a brilliant man who knows his way around any problem involving physics or mathematics. He will always have the answer and is very easy to get private time with in and out of class. He teaches pretty intense but gives breaks and is very clear. Only part is tests are very hard, make sure to review heavily.

I'm not sure why his rating here is so good. Sure he's extremely nice, but the way he solves problems are SO much more complex than they need to be, he makes a simple problem confusing! Also he NEVER explains physics concepts in class, he only solves problems. Its more of a math class than a physics class. Doesn't follow the book whatsoever.

He is definitely one of the best physics profs, he will answer your questions fully and his lectures are great. This class has 6 tests (about every 2 weeks)including the final which is not cumulative, a few labs, graded homework. You have unlimited time to take tests so take your time to get a good grade. You should know how to do calculus well!

Hands down the best professor I've ever had. Would take ancient egyptian quilt sewing if he was the professor. Helpful, Smart, knows how to teach. Marty is a professor that knows how people learn. MARTY ROCKS!!!!!!!

Marty is awesome - great professor and great personality. Obviously he knows what's he's talking about, but he is a prof that actually knows how to teach really well. Really wants you to learn and do well and will assist you with any questions. You leave actually having learned something! Definitely recommend him over any other prof!

Marty is the man. My favorite prof at UST. The class can be confusing at times, but Marty will help you understand it in every aspect. If you are taking physics at St. Thomas and have the chance to get into his class, DO SO! Tests can be difficult, but he will make sure you are prepared before you take it.

I started out with a different prof at the beginning of the year and made the switch to Marty. He is amazing. He is so helpful and wants to see you succeed. This class is extremely difficult no matter who you have but Marty makes it fun and challenging but takes the frustration out of it.If you have the option take Dr. Johnston over anyone else.

Marty dominates. I dropped physics 1 spring semister and he helped me out to figure out the next fall. The way he teaches is amazing. Every prof should learn from Marty. Easy to get along with, helpful beyond imagineation but his tests are difficult, but he prepares you well.
