Comment:

If your a freshman at BloomU do not take his western civ class. Easily hardest class i took as a freshman. His exams are on your time but take hours and hours to find the information to answer it (i took 4hrs 45mins on the final & got a 60%). He wrote back to me on my essay for my midterm and final and basically just wrote 4 paragraphs roasting me.

Comment:

He gives the class name tags so at every class you have to get your name tag and thats how he takes attendance. The quizzes every week were based on the documents from that week and the essays he grades extremely hard. He told our class that we did it wrong and didnt answer the question at all. Wouldnt take the class again at all !

Comment:

Professor Hickey was so nice in class, however I saw a different side when it came to grading papers.. he would give feedback that I took as very degrading and not at all positive. Hes very lecture heavy and doesnt use powerpoints so you have to show up to class. Hes very intelligent and knows what he teaches but I wouldnt take him again.

I went to every class and worked my ass off on the papers. On 2 out of the 3 papers we turned in he said that 75% of the class did the paper wrong. He grades papers like it is for a level 400 class and I took Western Civ 1650- present which is a lvl 126 class.

Comment:

I took Western Civ since the 1650's with him my freshman year and it was the hardest class I had. He grades tests pretty hard, especially the essay section. He does give the essay questions many weeks early for each test. If you do not read or do the homework you will have a very hard time passing. Very nice guy but definitely a hard teacher.

Comment:

Very Passionate about topic which makes it easier to listen to his lectures. He makes the readings into more of a story rather than a dull lecture. Very nice and caring. Readings are required and taking notes is ideal since you can use your notes on quizzes and exams. The class doesn't require homework or papers. Very casual and one on one class

He is very passionate about his lectures which makes it a little more interesting even though topics are quite dull. He grades his document analysis very hard even when you think you've answered the question perfectly you missed something and will not get a great grade on it. However he provides an excessive amount of extra credit.

awful. long lectures, fails to draw anyones attention. assigns papers and gives everyone awful grades and is brutal with his feedback. couldnt wait to finish his class. ended with a c+, has no mercy grading his midterm and final papers.

He knows the material very well and is very helpful if you are struggling. As long as you READ THE TEXT BOOK you can pass with a good great. He genuinely cares about his students he offers extra credit relatively often.

This class is pretty hard to fail as long as you listen and take good notes during the lecture. He gives quizzes everyday tuesday and thursday which help your grade. There are no tests, but there is a midterm and final paper. He makes you feel like an idiot in his feedback he leaves for your papers. Overall, not a terrible teacher.

depending on how you learn will determine if you should take this class. i'm a history major and hated this class. you have quizzes on bolt everyday tuesday ones are easy vocab and thursdays are indepth questions. you write a midterm and final exam and he is very rude with the comments he leaves on them

Great prof. He's really excited about what he's teaching. Lectures can get a bit dry, and you HAVE to read the text, but other than than it's a great course. Hickey is very helpful if you have questions. If you have to take Western Civ, definitely take it with Hickey.

Dr. Hickey is a brilliant man. I haven't learned more about my major than anyone besides Hickey. His classes are NOT HARD! However, the workload is a burden. You will have to read and then read more. The crazy thing is I hated reading, now I love it! Take Hickey, he's a good man. If you absorb his interpretations, you will become more sophisticate

I loved Hickey. You have to do a ton of reading but its really worth it. He's one of the best professors I've ever had at explaining things as well. He was always helpful and was really flexible about my schedule because I commuted and had to miss out on a couple classes because of snow.

Comment:

Ugh, I did not like him. Put up VERY lengthy notes up on the doc cam, but talked at the same time so I never knew which notes to follow. Quizzes are EXTREMELY annoying...most of them were about six questions long but covered 3 LONG chapters of reading...definitely not worth my time spent studying.
