You have to go to class everyday because his tests are all lecture based. Lots of memorization. Its unclear what aspects of his lecture are tested so you have to study everything. There are only about 100 points in his entire class, so if you get a 10/20 on your first (of three) exam, you have to get 100% the rest of the semester to get a 90% grade

Worst class I've ever taken, if you can avoid taking any classes with him do it. The rambles on about his personal life and tells stories that are supposed to relate to the class but don't. He only grades 3 things for the entire class, midterm, final, and one essay. The problems is the final is worth double the points of the other two combined.

Insanely tough professor. There are 3 grades given in the class; a midterm, final, and a paper on a book from the book list, all graded subjectively. No study guide, no review, just a lot of information thrown at you. I had solid A's in the rest of my classes, worked my butt off for a C in his class, when I questioned this, he just smiled. AVOID!!!

Hughey talks a lot but everything he says is related to the tests. You just have to put the effort into reading and studying.

Do not take a class from Dr. H. He is unclear on what he lectures on, but expects you to understand. He tells pointless stories with no correlation to his lectures.

The final was worth more points than you were able to abtain in the class throughout the entire semester. The entire class was entirely lecture based with a few short readings. Last days before the test, instead of telling you what to look at to prepare he tells stories for the entire class (which at the end he tells you are fake) but tests on them

I'm not one to normally write reviews, but: I enjoyed his class far more than I thought I would. I took away a lot of useful and practical information. Dr. Hughey is a good lecturer and makes it easy to absorb the point he is making. Taking the course online in the summer was intense. There was a lot of work involved, but understandably so.

I dreaded this class because it is a purely lecture based with no text book. Gives less than 100 points all semester so it makes it difficult to earn points especially if you do bad on an exam. Gives very few assignments worth very little points. He stood in front and lectured without power points or anything to make it interesting.

So much reading in this class, we had three books to read from. The lectures did get a little boring, but he acknowledged that they were. He told us to ask questions, and sometimes we didn't start actual class material until a half-hour into it because he was talking with us. Awesome guy, but he makes you work for that grade with two tests.

You have to listen to every word of his long drawn out stories to get the small bits of info he puts into his tests. very few points for the class, and no textbook makes it difficult.

A lot of people say that Hughey is an extremely hard professor, but if you go to class, take notes, and LISTEN to his lectures (even if they go astray), there's no reason that you shouldn't pass. His "stories" DO PERTAIN to the material and are NOT pointless. They are meant to make a point. Hughey makes class interesting and is very intelligent!

Lecture based class. No book- book would have been helpful if he offered one...I Struggled with the class as there was no structure to the material.

Long lectures that mostly consist of him telling stories, but you have to catch every word or you're out of luck. Very minimal number of points so each one counts. No test reviews so you have to write down everything he says and study hard and hope thats enough. He's a nice guy but the class is hard work. Assigns many long and boring readings.

Very good personality, but not a good professor. All lecture with no books, power points, study guides, etc. Lectures are sometimes hard to understand the concept as he usually tells lots of stories.

His lectures are interesting, but often go no where. He's unorganized, and unclear on what exactly to expect on the tests. Will ask you every day "do you guys have any questions" in which no one will respond. Overall bad professor for soc 110. Would not recommend him for this course.

If you do bad in a Hughey class you're LAZY! His lectures are entertaining, & relate to the topics. He only gives a few tests all semester. go to class & review your notes. Stop being lazy & put the effort in. Hughey cares so much for his students & wants them to succeed. You'd know this if you bothered to have a conversation with the man!

His tests ?'s were so poorly written and his lectures were unclear and unorganized that his questions wouldn't align with what he says. He simply says that everything we need will come from the lecture. No book or website will help clarify HIS definitions of terms. 3 tests worth almost 20 points each, get 2 ?'s wrong on 1 and you're down a grade.

Hughes is a nice guy and a decent professor. Class attendance is absolutely necessary. Take good notes and be prepared to put in some serious study time. There were 3 tests throughout the semester and a few in class opportunities for extra credit. If you show up and pay attention it is not a tough course to pass.
