Comment:

Homework was easy, straight from the book. Make sure to follow his instructions. May come off as rude but not his intention, he is such a nice teacher. Makes a lot of funny jokes. Great teacher for subject that would have been too boring to be taught by anyone else.

Dr. Matthis puts no grades into blackboard all semester. His tests are hard so you have to study the study guide, but as long as you do that you really dont have to be in class everyday. He does give lots of homework which is straight out of the book and really gives a lot of points in the end.

So, a few big things. 1) TAKE NOTES. 2) A lot of lectures; He's also very opinionated and very liberal. It's best not to talk at all if you are conservative as it will just derail the lecture and drag it out longer 3) The tests are not exactly note based wholly. Print the reviews out early and answer with his lecture. You'll pass.

If you have to take philosophy or ethics class as an elective it is hard for me to recommend against Dr. Matthis. One the one hand his class was incredibly boring as it consisted entirely of just copying down notes he wrote on the board. Though if you just put in minimal effort you should get a good grade.

Worse professor and super disrespectful to students. RMP led me to take him and I regret it. Boring lectures. horrible handwriting. Do NOT take him, you might think I'm just that student that didn't even try but no. I wrote two 5 page essays for extra credit on top of doing all the homework and studying for tests. Still made bad grade.

100% lecture, he writes the notes on the board and you copy them down. Not very hard concepts, but lots of memorization. The assignments are so easy & most of the papers are short and easily graded. The tests are exactly like the study guides and easy. Dude has a monotone but he's interesting and even funny sometimes. Just show up and you'll pass

Really cool guy, he has a very monotone voice but do not fall asleep you will need those notes. Has maybe 4 tests the whole semester, they are a little bit difficult but he gives tons of super easy homework that will really cushion those grades and he assigns one paper. I would take him again if needed.

Worst class I've ever taken in my life. The professor makes you want to pull your hair out. The material isn't too hard its just had to understand and the professor isn't exactly the friendliest when it comes to asking questions. Seriously this class stopped me from graduating on time and knocked my GPA down from over a 3.4

Mathis is like most instructors at Lamar, if you don't go to class you will not do well. I had no trouble with the material, it's simple reading and in class discussion. Tests were easy, book is cheap and not hard to find used.

I LOVE Professor Matthis, and I do not understand anyone who doesn't. Everything he writes on the board is what will be on the test, nothing is superfluous. The "homework" assignments are super easy, and like I said, every single question on the test is covered by your notes. You MUST be on time and you MUST write everything down. You'll get an A.

I am a former student of Dr. MM & I absolutely think the WORLD of him. His techniques are FIRM but FAIR & he's very instructive & Informative in his lectures & Pushes his students to bring out the very Best of their learning ability & talents. I really love philosophy, but this guy killed it for me. I hated sitting through his lectures, he was incredibly boring. He has very little scientific knowledge and his lectures on science made me want to pull my hair out, he often got stuff wrong. His class is set up for note taking, cookie cutter answering dimwits. No original thinking required.

Very funny and intelligent professor. Love this class! His teaching style is awesome, he'll teach you a concept that blows your mind one class then teach you a concept questioning it the next class that again blows your mind. This class is a must take, and so is this professor! You get to learn all about the beginnings of thought and logic!
