Miles does not hand out grades or help that you do not deserve. He doesn't put up with student who are not willing to put in the hard work. If you work hard and show interest, you will succeed. He is the best J professor I have ever had. He is very knowledgable and has helped me to be a better reporter. He has helped me land many opportunities.

Comment:
Miles Maguire is a boring lecturer who thinks he is funny, but is not. In all honesty though, his whole class felt like busy work and he is unclear where his grading comes from. Plus there is a lot of meaningless group presentations you have to do.

Great professor and he can grade tough but it is for a good reason, to become a good reporter. I started out average but once the course was complete I received high grades. Very friendly and takes out time to help when needed. If you want to learn a lot about reporting Professor Maguire is the best there is.

He's very "his way or the highway" but if you do it his way you are sure to do well. Attend class and do all of the assignments and extra credit. The course is relatively easy and straight forward.

He's VERY particular. Not much room for student opinion. He has his favorites and grades on attitude. Be positive and do things the way he wants them and you'll do just fine.

Had him for Editing, didn't like him much in the beginning only because I had heard he was awful, but he ended up being awesome. He's funny, and as long as you can joke around with him you'll get along. Participate a ton, even if your totally wrong, he will recognize your effort!I Highly recommend him!

I failed the final editing project miserably and still got a b in the class. He's kind of a strickler and his lectures run dry, but the 100 participation points and many ec chances helps a lot. He's been around the block as a journalist, so he's helpful when it comes to that.

At first you will hate him with a passion, but you will slowly adjust to his grading style and flourish. Do as much ec as you can cause you'll need all the points you can get. You can use notes and the web for all assignments (including tests and quizzes). He curved the mid-term by 7 points.

THe first half of the semester is ALL about grammar and the second half is all about the design elements. My advise would be to do extra credit very early on in the semester or you'll be shooting yourself for not doing it by the end. Basically it's a difficult class but he's more than willing to help you out, so just ask.

Had him for 221 also. Structures class like a real newspaper editing room, which is a very effective method. Therefore, you must develop a relationship with him and let him get to know you personally to get a full experience from the class. Is friendly and gives great advice once you get to know him and is extremely dedicated to his job.

at first i didn't like him, but that was probably due more to my knowledge of the subject and tools used to learn (re: InDesign). after a semester with him, I found i learned a lot and actually really thought he was a good professor. i signed up for another class with him.

if you're looking for a biast egotistic professor this is the guy for you! Very arogant. Grading is based more on his opinion on a topic than yours - so write your papers according to his beliefs and not your own.

Pointless class, but reqeired to take for the Honors Program. His section was a little dry and not much for class discussion because there wasn't much to say.

Had him for an honors class and he taught a journalism segment. Had very little work for us to do. In class activities were dumb; he usually let us out early. But I only had him for 4 weeks for this special segment of the class, so I don't know how he is usually in general. Very boring in this class though.

Take advantage of the extra credit opportunities. My grade would have been a B, but I was able to hand in enough extra credit to receive an A. There are multiple busy-work assignments, Be sure to complete them all (every point helps), because the Labs are hard. He is a knowledgeable professor.
