Ma is a really good professor. He cares about the material & cares about you understanding it. Hes a tough grader for essays only because he has achievable expectations. Eng339 was mostly a breeze as long as youre good at analyzing a bit, participating enough & good attendance. He likes to know youre engaged/have an opinion. Very funny. Cares.

Ma is a great teacher and one of the best working in the English department at UB. Make sure you do the work, but he is understanding and will give extensions when needed at no penalty. Go in looking to engage, makes everything better.

Such an amazing lecturer, inspirational and dedicated. If you do not get it he will keep explaining it in different ways until you understand the concept. The papers are the hardest I've written at UB, he is very particular about the way they are written and its format. May be hard to get an A, but you will definitely leave more knowledgeable

He's hands down one of the best professors I've ever had in UB. He's intense, inspirational and hilarious. I came out of his classes learning something new everyday. There is some reading required before every class period but it's not too long. The papers he assign aren't too bad either. TAKE HIM FOR UGC211 IF YOU CAN! You won't regret it.

Dr. Ma is a wonderful professor. He's very tough, but that's only because he loves what he does and he genuinely wants you to be the best you can. Honestly, his class was the best class I've ever taken here at UB. He' funny, open, and talking to him at his OH is awesome. He's not just a professor who teaches well, he's a person you want to befriend

Professor Ma has a lot more to him than meets the eye. I wasn't by any means a student who deserved a B. In fact, I rarely participated when class started, my papers all got C's. But I made the effort to try. He rewarded me for it. This class offered me new perspectives on life and changed the way I look at the world. Ma is an AMAZING person.

Ma is a great professor, but he's tough. He's very knowledgable in the material and lectures with precision and clarity. Four papers in total, and participation is an integral part of your grade. Ma is an amazing professor and his interest in english is evident through his teaching. He gets really into each of the lectures and helps you to understand the material clearly, as long as you are willing to put in the effort and ask questions when needed. Absolutely incredible professor. Explains everything thoroughly and is available to help whenever help is needed. He is passionate about the material and really challenges you to think beyond your usual boundaries. One of the top professors at the University in my opinion. Makes everything worth it. Plus he''s hilarious.

Absolutely amazing. Ma manages to be serious and diligent and still have a great sense of humor. His accent is just strong enough to get a kick out of his reading certain words. This is not a class to slack off in. The reading is demanding, but only 4 response papers. This class alone was worth my tuition.

Ma is one of the few legitimate teachers in the UB English Department. He challenges you to be a serious academic, not just some floundering wanna-be jack kerouac stuck getting his B.A. If you are serious about what you study, you should take at least one class with Ma. He is respectful, clear, helpful, and responsive. Best teacher I had.

Challenging... His re-reading of the assigned essays back to the class really did not help me. Memorizing word-for-word definitions that I didn't understand didn't help me either. His teaching style and my learning style just did not mesh. Wish I had taken it with another professor. Good luck.

Excellent lecturer, extremely well organized, but puts too much emphasis on memorization for my taste. Ma takes this course very seriously and expects students to do the same. Don't expect an easy A. But you will learn a lot about criticism from a nice guy with a good sense of humor and high level of concern for his students.

I did not face any professors as challenging as Ma. He is a very diffucult teacher. He will ask you to use your brain. He is very knowledgable and has a good sense of humor. I also had him for ENG 349, which was just as difficult.

He's a great teacher, but he expects a lot out of his students. Not heavy on reading, but a quiz every class that needs at least an hour of study for (and memorization too), but he tells you what you need to know. Rigorous, but a great teacher, and very helpful. You'll know criticism inside and out by the time you're done. Highly recommended.

He's well versed in poetry, but he expects a lot from the class. Discussion expected with poetry. Frequent response papers, if you do have him make him clarify what he wants in the paper or else he will tell you afterward. I agree that he possesses passion for his teaching and he is funny.
