Comment:

Tomes is a solid choice, her course is very straightforward and yet still interesting. You will know exactly what can be on the final/midterm before it, so just prepare everything and you're solid. The readings are only necessary enough to get through recitation participation and write the papers, which i got As on by skimming the books

Comment:

History of Alternative Medicine was a very interesting class. Interactive and a lot of discussion. She's a caring professor and is willing to help. Passionate about what she does. Would recommend!

Comment:

HIS 292 is a really good class. It covers what you probably already learned in high school but in more depth. There are two papers but the materials needed are given to you. All the power points are posted to blackboard and the lectures are recorded. But attendance is mandatory. Professor Tomes is amazing and makes the class fun.

Comment:

Prof Tomes is a great teacher. She really knows her stuff when it comes to history. Her lectures can become a bit much because they are long and she does not always finish her slides. She is very nice and was always willing to help me out in office hours.

This woman could make even the most boring history topic so interesting. She is an amazing lecturer and her interest and fascination with history really shows. Make sure you read ALL directions on any assignment or review sheet she gives out. If you ask her a question that can easily be answered by re-reading the handouts, she will be snippy.

Class requires reading and attending lectures but the professor is outstanding. This is my second time taking a class with her and I would again if I could. She is clear, funny, and passionate. She is one of the most brilliant professors in the history departement. She genuinely tries to make classes interesting

HIS 399 is an easy, interesting and informative course. If you need to fulfill a DEC take Tomes. Just two papers and a final that is exactly like her review sheet. Tomes and her assistant Kelly were very clear and good at getting back to their students

She's a great professor if you're interested in history. The Dec courses that she teaches does give quite a bit of work, so if you're turned off by that, I would suggest taking another class. I slept through class almost every day because her tone is a bit monotonous. The final isn't bad at all though.

Do not take this class for a Dec. It's too much work. She is an amazing teacher if you are interested in history but if you are taking it as a Dec and you have no interest in history, stay away from this class. She grades fairly but you have to put in the work and effort.

Comment:

Professor Tomes is one of the few profs at SB that I can truly say I would take another class with in an instant. She teaches the course material and not opinion, which is something I have tremendous respect for. Take her class, you'll be happy you did.

Teaches a level 100 class like it's level 300 because she's head of the department. Her quizzes were harder then some finals I've taken. Essay assignments were extremely specific. Tends to assign very long readings that don't have much value. She may be good for upper level classes, but avoid her for 103

I would not recommend this class for non-history majors. Interesting lectures, a lot of readings, very strict grader, expects a lot from your papers. If you never took history classes before, don't take this class!

interesting class shes a good professor keeps you interested in lecture my only problem was that most of the coursework came at the very end of the semester so i didn't really have any idea how i was going to do in the class until the end. 2 papers are the major part of your grade.
