Comment:
Professor Hughes is very involved with lecture and does get side tracked, but in doing so he proves a very valid point in US history. His test curriculum is very unclear but be history historically accurate and specific and you'll do fine. This isn't high school, history majors are in each integrated class and that is why Hughes has to be thorough

Not innovative at all. Its a shame, he teaches like he should have lived in the 1700s. His style is strictly Lecture. Doesnt try to make the material interesting. I am a history buff and he made history for me not as exciting as it usually is. Dont bother taking him.

Absolute worst history teacher I have ever had. He expects you to remember every page of the book. He also spends most of the time lecturing on things that have nothing to do with class. I do NOT recommend

The WORST professor I have ever. He is RUDE, BORING, forces political and religious views on students. More than 1/2 the lecture is his opinion not text related. Expect's u to memorize ENTIRE text. Doesn't allow student questions. Likes to make students feel belittled. Is rude so students drop his class. Class started w/ 23, end w/ 6. Unorganized.

He's a nice guy, OUTSIDE of the classroom. Many students drop his class. Very tough, very opinionated. I would never recxomend to take him. Unclear with his lectures and expects you to know 15 chapters of history for the final. If you decide to take him, good luck.

History isn't my strong suit, but this class doesn't help to change that. After one quiz (on which I received a C+ ), there was a big speech about how taking notes and reading for class are key to passing the testsquizzes, and how it's obvious barely anyone read. I DID read; I just have difficulty memorizing a whole chapter by the next class.

Professor Hughes was probably the easiest professor I've ever had. His class is not difficult. All you have to do is regularly attend class, listen to what he has to say (disregarding random tangents) and take notes. Your notes should be guidelines for the exams. I never opened the book and I walked out with an A.

you can't keep up with him as he "explains" the notes (as he gives 10 pages a day).he is funny but i do not recommend his class.

Had Hughes for US 1. He was very book oriented...wanted one-two chapters read per week and chapters were very long. Tests were all essay oriented and he is a hard graded

Hughes was a terrible professor. He is very intelligent, yes. However, his class is EXTREMELY difficult. I started out in a full class of 30 students and by the end of the semester there were 10 of us left. His tests are incredibly difficult, and he is not at all approachable. He also insulted the students on several occasions. What a nightmare!

I absolutely enjoyed Professor Hughes class. He always made it clear what was necessary to succeed; gave all essay tests. Professor Hughes expects an independent student who will read the text. If you're a dumb dumb expecting to skate, keep it moving. He is one of the few real professors in this school.

I had him for Western Civ 1. NOT an easy class. You have to do your homework and read the text. But that's what should be expected of college students. I am an AVERAGE student and I managed to get a B+ in his class, with effort, but nothing back-breaking.

I tried very hard in this class and still finished with only a C+. I found him extremely interesting and enjoyed listening to him speak but his expectations of his students were ridiculous, I mean, I really don't know to this day what his expectations were or how they could have been met. I'm glad I got his perspective on things, just not a C+

I took 10 pages of notes my first class and then gave up. My notes were unclear as was he. I'm sure he's wonderful for majors, but if you have to take it as a gen ed, avoid Santa at all costs.

I made the mistake of taking a telecourse with Huges. The lectures you watch so sooo boring I could barely stay awake. As for the testing it's all essay. With no hints on which topics would be on the test you have to memorize 500 pages. Never again!

This was the hardest A I have ever got in my entire life. I had to memorize 500 pages of the textbook almost word by word and spent 4 hours a day studying for a subject that is not even my major. I do not recommend this professor if you are republican, believe in God, or not a history major. If you want a challenge, however, go for it!

Everyone hates on this guy because he actually makes you work a little bit. If you take your notes and pay full attention in class, like your supposed to, and study them you will do great on his tests. The five page research paper is easy. Extremely intelligent man about history and politics. I loved this class and would take him again.

OVERALL ENJOYABLE CLASS, BUT CHALLENGING. This is not the class to take if you are looking for an easy A! He expects much from his students but makes learning history interesting. Prof. H knows History inside & out! He DOES tend to throw in his political views - but those are his opinions and dont need to be yours!

I had him for Western Civ. Yes the class was hard, yes he is opinionated, but if you try hard and participate you will do fine. I think he is a nice guy but likes the tough guy attitude. If you want an easy A don't take his class you wont get it, but you will receive a lot of knowledge.
