I took his God In All Sounds english class and I wouldn't recommend it if you're not prepared to read every night and write about EVERYTHING you do/read in the class. Constant reflections, summaries and readings. However, there is no midterm or final, just a final paper (which is great).

Very pleasant, remarkably ingenious professor. Kind of gets sidetracked sometimes, but it's with good intent. You'll definitely learn a lot.

Dr. Paul Humphreys is by far the best professor in the music department. He wants every student to do well and is very intelligent. Before this class i had taken theory with Dr. Saya and did not do well and once I enrolled in Humphreys theory class I did a lot better and everyone else in class seemed to think he is a better professor than Saya.

Paul Humphreys is hilarious. He makes some pretty funny comments. And he loves puns. He's a really nice guy, but this class is extremely confusing. He introduces topics and then just moves on before the class has a chance to understand it. It's almost as if the information is too basic for him to teach. Great man, but class is hard.

He is really nice and does his best to teach elementary concepts to students. He is an intellectual and uses a broad vocabulary so he can sometimes leave things unclear and ambiguous. He dedicates time to students who want to learn, though. The only reason you won't like this class is maybe the workload and if you don't want to learn music.

the WORST teacher ever! i personally love music and have been in musical world since very young, but this class is just incomprehensible! you basically have to teach yourself. lectures and projects are absurd!

pretty much had to teach myself the entire course. all he did was introduce the topics and then i'd use friends and the internet to learn them. also, he never explains the homework before passing it out. i went into this class expecting a intro level course and he makes it super hard. plus he teaches about other countries music which is pointless.

Dr. Humphs is way cool and super passionate about music. The only downside is his class is not as easy as you'd think and there are a lot of essays. :( But if you like music this is your teacher!

Nice guy. Very passionate about music. However this was a history of jazz class for majors and non majors. he made it more of a music class and expected us to know musical concepts. Class is easy. going is pointless. he gives you study guides and outlines to fill out on your own. got an A with little work done. but i was clueless all semester

wow this is a history class...not a music class. Yeah we play pipes in class which is not fun at all...but this guy is real sincere. the only bad thing is that he is unclear. You might want to know a little about music before you take this class or it will be confusing

Great professor and great class. He actually loves what he does and cares about his students, unlike the other professors in the music department.

He is THE SWEETEST man, he is very passionate about his ethnomusicology... but boy, does his mind wander. Pick a term out of the book that he hasn't covered and I can guarantee he will go off on a tangent for at least 20 minutes. Hump-dawg in the house!

he's a really nice guy and has passion, but the fundamentals course is less than simple; you learn a lot of non-western ideals and build pipes that you play in class (despite what you're thinking it was not fun)

He often goes off on tangents (and amusing ones) so he can be hard to follow, but he's interesting and always willing to help. One of my favorite LMU professors.
